Private firms look abroad for solutions to Japan's food security
As the global population rises and puts increasing pressure on food supplies -- and food prices -- some Japanese firms are looking abroad to secure a stable supply. The mission is a vital one as, on a caloric basis, Japan filled only 39 percent of its own food needs in fiscal 2010 -- a number that is only likely to drop as farming households grow fewer and with no prospect of an increase in domestic food production on the horizon.
