More than 30 dolphins wash up on the beach Chiba Boso Peninsula

April 3, 2023 18:22 Chiba Prefecture

On the morning of the 3rd, over 30 dolphins were found washed up on the coast of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture. Surfers gathered at the site and worked to bring the dolphins back to the shore, but it was confirmed that three of them were dead.

Early in the morning on the 3rd, there were multiple reports from people who were surfing at the police station that has jurisdiction over Ichinomiya Town and Isumi City, Chiba Prefecture, saying that "dolphins have been washed up on the beach."

When the Ichinomiya town hall was contacted, it was confirmed that 32 dolphins had been washed up within a distance of about 500 meters from the coast of the town to the coast of the neighboring city of Isumi.

At the scene, surfers were pushing the dolphin back out to sea with their hands.

Some of the dolphins were pushed back by the waves even after leaving the shore, and the workers were trying to push them back out to sea again.

According to Ichinomiya Town, it has been confirmed that three animals have died at the scene so far.

A man in his 30s who was a surfer who was trying to get the dolphins back out to sea said, "It was very heavy, and we had to work with three or four adults. It depends on the physical strength of the dolphins, but I want them to return to the sea safely." I was talking.

A local woman in her 40s who was watching the situation on the beach said, "I live about 10 minutes by car, but I was surprised that I had never seen one before. I want to return it to the sea as soon as possible." I was talking to

Expert ``There are cases where the body is weakened due to hypothermia and is launched''

A senior researcher at the National Museum of Nature and Science, Yuko Tajima, who is familiar with the ecology of marine mammals, who visited the site, said, "Dolphins are a type of pilot dolphin, and they live around Japan and often visit this area in early spring. Since they live in groups of 100, it is possible that the washed-up dolphins were in groups. In the past, animals that prefer warm waters entered cold waters and suffered from hypothermia. There was a case where the dolphin was weakened and washed up on the shore. It is not clear why it was washed up based on the current situation, but we will try to understand the cause by dissecting the dead dolphin.

Seven dolphins confirmed dead again on the coast of Chiba Boso Peninsula

April 4, 2023 18:42 environment

Seven dolphins were confirmed dead on the 4th on the coast of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, where more than 30 dolphins were found washed up on the 3rd. In the future, the research group will investigate in detail the cause of death.
32 dolphins washed up on the beach from Ichinomiya-cho, Chiba Prefecture to Isumi-shi on the 3rd, two of them died, and the remaining dolphins were sent offshore.

According to Ichinomiya Town, a total of seven dolphins were washed up on this beach from morning to evening on the 4th and were confirmed dead.

Six of the dead dolphins were recovered by a research group led by Yuko Tajima, a senior researcher at the National Museum of Nature and Science, who is familiar with the ecology of marine mammals.

Chief Researcher Tajima said, "I want to perform an autopsy to find out the cause. Unless there is an obvious disease in the internal organs, I think it will take two or three months to get the results."

She added, ``In past cases, organisms that prefer warm waters entered cold waters and became hypothermia-like and were weakened and washed up, but it's still unclear if it's the same this time. I want to continue."

According to research director Cotton Tajima, who was involved in the autopsy, five of the six were female. The dolphin is a "Kazuha pilot dolphin" that prefers warm seas, and it is possible that it washed ashore to protect a weakened pregnant female in a group near the outer chamber where cold seawater is mixed. There have also been reports of dolphins being infected with bird flu overseas, and we are waiting for test results. :tiphat:https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/ec8a9f98f64b439e2e34a9fd2940fa83eab3e8c9
