Conveying the true feelings of disaster victims

Six months have passed since I moved from Tokyo to begin reporting from the Sanriku Coast in Iwate Prefecture, an area devastated by the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. Each day I notice the feelings of people affected by the disasters -- the sadness of losing a loved one, the feeling of self-condemnation for surviving while others have died, and worries about the future. During my time here, I've also been taught the importance of time spent with family and friends -- things that I had taken for granted.

YAMAGATA -- The date is Dec. 13, 2011, and the handful of students cloistered away in one room at the Tohoku University of Art and Design (TUAD) here are on a mission. Mind over matter

Men participate in daikan misogi, a ritual to pray for good health, at Nehama Beach in the city of Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, on Saturday. The day marked the start of daikan, the coldest period of winter according to the old Chinese calendar. Some years have seen as many as 50 men participate in the annual ritual, which has been sponsored by Otsuchi Inari Shrine in the neighboring town of Otsuchi for about 30 years. However, there were only nine participants this year as some regular members fell victim to the March 11 tsunami.
