Kirishima erupts in spectacular fashion

Erik Klemetti on January 26, 2011, 8:54 AM

Around the globe in Japan, Kirishima, a volcano on the southern island of Kyushu, has started erupting vigorously. I haven't been able to find many reports, but the Tokyo VAAC issued an ash warning for Kirishima to elevations up to ~7.6 km / 25,000 feet and the Kirishima webcam (there are three, but only one that is still working) seems to be showing significant glowing material coming from the summit area. This activity looks to be phreatomagmatic explosions throwing material from the crater and/or pyroclastic flows and reports indicate bombs being thrown upwards of 2 km (Japanese) from the vent.

Mt Shinmoe magma building up since last year

A geological study has found that more than 6-million square meters of magma built up deep under Mount Shinmoe between last May and its eruption on Wednesday.

The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, a research institute affiliated with the land ministry, says the ground had been swelling since December 2009 around Mount Shinmoe in the Kirishima range in southwestern Japan.
GPS data from observation points set up around the mountain confirmed the ground moved from 1 to 2 centimeters toward the outside of the mountain between early May of last year and early January of this year.
Based on the results, the amount of underground magma could be calculated....

Shinmoedake, a volcano on Japan?s southern island of Kyushu, erupted for a seventh time in the last week, emitting an ash plume that may affect international flights after a series of domestic transport disruptions.

The 1,421-meter (4,660 feet) volcano in the Kirishima range erupted at 10:47 a.m. local time, following two eruptions overnight, a branch division of Japan?s Meteorological Agency said in statements today. The volcano spewed smoke and ash as high as 3,000 meters before drifting east-southeast toward the coast near Miyazaki.

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. said the ash may delay flights between Hong Kong and airports in Nagoya, Tokyo and Osaka, according to a statement on the carrier?s website today.

Japan Airlines Corp. and All Nippon Airways Co., Asia?s largest listed carrier, said flights to or from Miyazaki airport may be canceled or diverted to Kagoshima airport and advised passengers to check before traveling, according to separate statements on the carriers? websites.
