Japan's smoking rate falls below 20%

The health ministry says the smoking rate in Japan has fallen below 20 percent for the first time since recordkeeping began in 1986.

Smoking rate falls to record-low 19.5% in 2010

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The smoking rate hit an all-time low of 19.5 percent in Japan in 2010, down 3.9 percentage points from the preceding year, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said Tuesday.

A health ministry panel has approved a draft plan seeking to decrease the smoking rate to 12.2 percent by fiscal 2022, facilitating the ministry's long-hampered wish to officially set a target figure, it has been learned.
