Smoking rate falls to record-low 19.5% in 2010

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The smoking rate hit an all-time low of 19.5 percent in Japan in 2010, down 3.9 percentage points from the preceding year, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said Tuesday.

A health ministry panel has approved a draft plan seeking to decrease the smoking rate to 12.2 percent by fiscal 2022, facilitating the ministry's long-hampered wish to officially set a target figure, it has been learned.

Gov't submits plan to cut smoking rate to 12% to anticancer panel

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The health ministry on Wednesday presented an advisory panel with a new basic plan for anticancer programs, including the goal of cutting the smoking rate in Japan to 12.2 percent in 10 years, officials said.
