Japan, RI exploring cooperation in bird flu vaccine production

TOKYO (Antara): Indonesia and Japan are holding intensive talks on Indonesia's desire to develop its own capacity in handling the spread of bird flu disease and on possible cooperation in the production of bird flu medicines and vaccines.

"Japan understands Indonesia's strong desire to develop its own capacity in the production of bird flu vaccines and medicines to help overcome the spread of bird flu," Chairman of National Commission for Bird Flu Control, Bayu Krisnamurthi said in Tokyo Wednesday.

Krisnamurthi said Japan and Indonesia had been holding talks on possible bilateral cooperation in the production of bird flu vaccines.

He said the talks were aimed at building mutual understanding on the form of cooperation based on the principles of the World Health Organization (WHO) but in support of Indonesia's desire to build its capacity in producing its own medicines without depending too much on foreign assistance.

"This is badly needed considering the fact that the pandemic of the disease is found in Indonesia. Indonesia is required to have the ability to provide medicines and prevent the spread have the ability to provide medicines and prevent the spread of the disease in a short time," he said.

Krisnamurthi said that it was a must for Indonesia to have enough stocks of cheap vaccines in various provinces because the health conditions of people and animals had not yet been encouraging in all provinces.

Indonesia and Japan are cooperating in developing animal health laboratories in Subang, Bogor (West Java) and Lampung in Sumatra. The Bogor and Lampung projects are laboratory capacity expansion while the Subang one is a new laboratory.(***)

Re: Japan, Indonesia exploring cooperation in bird flu vaccine production

how does
> bilateral cooperation in the production of bird flu vaccines.
and
> own capacity in the production of bird flu vaccines
fit together ?

Aren't they just swpping the dependance on Baxter with a dependance on Tokyo ?
Aren't they content with the Baxter-cooperation ?

what's with the vaccination campaign announced to start in November ?
I assume the vaccine (2M doses ?) is already produced.

Re: Japan, Indonesia exploring cooperation in bird flu vaccine production

I can't read in the report, if it is about human or poultry vaccines.

Re: Japan, Indonesia exploring cooperation in bird flu vaccine production

I assumed human. Indonesia sent some samples to Tokyo recently,
Kudun(sp?) cooperates with Tokyo AFAIK, Indonesia announced
