Japan paralyzes the import of birds from bird flu in Denmark

The Government of Japan today ordered the suspension of import of poultry and eggs from Denmark after recent outbreaks of bird flu in that country, according to the local agency Kyodo reported.

Just yesterday the Danish health authorities ordered the slaughter of 2,000 chickens and ducks from a farm on the island of Funen (centre of the country), where on Monday confirmed a case of bird flu.

The Directorate General of Food Danish clarified that this is not H5N1, the most deadly strain of bird flu, but a less dangerous variety.

The Japanese Ministry of Health assured that this moratorium on the import of Danish products barely affect the Japanese market, since the amounts of meat and eggs that were bought were limited to Denmark.

During the past year, Japan imported from the European Union a total of twenty tons and 515 tons of poultry eggs.

Moreover, Japanese authorities confirmed yesterday that three swans found dead on Monday in northern Japan were infected with the H5 variety of bird flu, but have not specified whether it is the H5N1 type.

that's OK to ban imports until the situation is cleared, but...

515 tons of eggs cost less than one million Euros.
And that's the whole EU. Danmark is only a fraction.

so, why issue an article at all ?
It's just political.

Are Japanese eggs banned in Japan ?
They seem to have more avian flu than Denmark.

Are Danish eggs banned in Germany, EU ?
That's a much larger market for Danish eggs
with strict common regulations.
