Re: Japan - H5N1 at castle site park in Toyama prefecture

2ND LD: Tottori, Toyama pref. experts check for other signs of bird flu+

Experts from the Tottori prefectural government on Sunday found 16 dead birds in the city of Yonago during field surveys conducted to look for signs of abnormalities in wild birds after the detection of a strain of the highly pathogenic avian flu virus in a dead swan in the prefecture.

The experts said they will send the birds to Tottori University to investigate whether they were infected with the deadly bird flu virus.

About 20 animal specialists patrolled roads, stretches of coastline and other areas within a 10-kilometer radius of a house in Yonago where the infected swan was found, and within a 10 km radius of a poultry farm hit earlier by bird flu in the neighboring city of Yasugi in Shimane Prefecture, officials said. The house and the farm are about 7 km apart.

The Tottori prefectural branch of the Wild Bird Society of Japan also conducted an emergency survey of rivers and lakes in the western Japan prefecture but did not found any dead or dying birds, they said.

The swan -- a wild young tundra swan -- was found ailing on Dec. 4 on the balcony of the house in Yonago and died the next day. The DNA structure of the H5N1 strain of flu virus it was carrying was "partially identical" to that confirmed at the farm in Yasugi early this month, suggesting there was a link, a university expert said Saturday.

Meanwhile, in Toyama Prefecture, where the H5 strain of bird flu was detected in one of two dead swans found Thursday in a park in the city of Takaoka, experts from the Toyama prefectural government watched around 2,000 migratory birds through binoculars at a botanical garden in the city of Toyama and visited poultry farms in Takaoka.

The experts also conducted on-site inspections at chicken farms and facilities including the prefecture's farming research center to check that they had been adequately disinfected and bird nets were being used properly to prevent the entry of wild birds.

Samples from the infected bird, a mute swan, have been sent to the National Institute of Animal Health in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, for tests to determine if the virus is virulent, local officials said.

In the wake of the bird flu infections in Tottori and Toyama prefectures, the Hyogo prefectural government also said it has decided to stop displaying white storks, designated as a special national treasure, raised at its park in Toyooka, to prevent contact with infected wild birds. Hyogo Prefecture is adjacent to Tottori Prefecture.

283 droppings were negative
*collected droppings 20 & 22 Dec

the surveillance to within a 10-kilometer radius of the Zoo terminates if there is no re-outbreak until 7 Jan
and the Zoo reopens on 8 Jan

however, Takaoka city keeps under surveillance because the poultry farmer takes thought for the infection spread
