Long journey ahead

A Ground Self-Defense Force water tank truck that will be used in peacekeeping operations in South Sudan is placed aboard an Antonov transport aircraft at Narita Airport on Friday before its scheduled departure that night. The plane, carrying three vehicles along with containers holding food, tents and other goods for a special GSDF unit, will arrive in Uganda as early as Sunday. The cargo will then be carried to South Sudan via land and air routes.

GSDF camp under construction

Ground Self-Defense Force personnel assemble cots at their camp in Juba, South Sudan. A 50-member advance unit, sent to prepare for the GSDF to participate in U.N. peacekeeping operations in South Sudan, has been living in tents while helping cover the ground in gravel and build ditches for prefabricated accommodation and command posts for the Japanese base.
