Emperor and Empress visit shelter in Tokyo, talk with evacuees
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami who are staying at a shelter in Tokyo on March 30.
It is the first time the Imperial couple has visited an evacuation shelter for those who have lost their homes in the Great East Japan Earthquake.....
.....According to sources close to the Imperial Household Agency, the Imperial couple has a strong desire to visit areas affected by the disaster to encourage local residents and reward those working to restore the region, but is refraining from doing so in order not to interfere with ongoing rescue operations or the situation at the crippled nuclear power plant in Fukushima.

First haul of fish since quake served to evacuees
In quake- and tsunami-hit Iwate prefecture, a group of local fishermen has gone fishing for the first time since the March 11th tremor.
Six fishermen in Ofunato city on board 2 different boats left the port shortly after 6:00 on Thursday morning as a gesture of encouragement to the people of the disaster- stricken city.
About 2 hours of operations inside the bay allowed them to capture some 500 rockfish....

MIYAKO, Iwate -- A bodhisattva statue buried under the rubble after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami has been unearthed and restored by local residents who hope to make it a symbol of the town's reconstruction.
The whereabouts of the 80-centimeter-tall stone Ksitigarbha statue -- commonly known as a "Jizo" statue in Japanese -- became unknown after it was washed away by the tsunami that was triggered by the magnitude 9.0 earthquake. A miniature temple that accommodated the statue was also carried away by the waters......

New civic employees in disaster-struck town prepare for long road ahead
A fresh new school and fiscal year began on April 1, despite the still-raw wounds inflicted by the recent earthquake and tsunami. Even in the Tohoku region, where many municipalities suffered massive damage, some local governments are introducing new civic employees to their respective positions.
In Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, 13 new civic employees were appointed to jobs. The same town lost its mayor, Koki Kato, to the tsunami. Of its 136 municipal employees, 32 were confirmed dead or are still missing....

U.S. rescue teams dispatched to the tsunami-ravaged Iwate Prefecture cities of Ofunato and Kamaishi were taken aback by the devastating scene in front of them. But what they found more striking were their encounters with the locals.

Thailand to send power facility to Japan
The Thai government is to send a complete power-generation facility with two gas-turbine generators to Japan to help restore electricity supplies affected by the March 11th disaster and damage to the Fukushima nuclear power complex.
Once operational, the facility is capable of producing 240,000 kilowatts of electricity, enough for between 80,000 and 240,000 households, depending on demand....

Taiwan raises $128 million in aid for Japan

The Japan Coast Guard has rescued a dog from a roof of a house drifting in waters off Miyagi Prefecture. The dog seems to have spent 3 weeks on the roof since the March 11th quake and tsunami hit his home.
On Friday afternoon, a coast guard helicopter saw a dog on a house drifting in the sea about 1.8 kilometers off Kesennuma City, northern Japan.......

The 33-year-old volunteer community firefighter clearing streets said any memento, no matter how muddied or damaged, could mean a world of difference to residents who lost so much after the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake......

U.S. Navy a good 'tomodachi' / Ship springs into action right after quake, crew works tirelessly
At 4:59 p.m. Tuesday, the stern gate of the USS Tortuga--a dock landing ship of the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet--opened slowly 10 kilometers off Miyako, Iwate Prefecture. About 25 minutes later, a 40-meter landing craft utility boat (LCU) docked inside the 185-meter-long vessel.
About 30 divers and other personnel were aboard the LCU, a vessel that transports soldiers and vehicles during emergencies. The divers had just spent about four hours mapping wrecked cars and concrete buildings that were destroyed and sent to the bottom of Miyako Bay by the March 11 tsunami.....

KESENNUMA, Miyagi--One day in late March, at about 8:30 a.m., a group of storeowners gathered at a small hill overlooking the city of Kesennuma. Among them, a pub owner. A menswear retailer.
