AEESA is going to check to see if any radioactive material has washed into the ocean from the water cannon efforts on the reactors.

Watch for any discharge of water runoff into the sea
13:22 May 21

Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the discharge has continued to work to cool the spent fuel pool, there is a possibility that some of the water flowing into the sea when it was injected, the Ministry of Atomic Energy Economy Safety Agency is now going to watch it and do not contain radioactive material.

Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is no longer cool to have you kept the spent fuel pool, and fire departments and the Self-Defense Forces are continuing to discharge water into the pool and the No. 3 No. 4. Watering is done from a distance with great force, and enter the case against building the pool ▽, has come out from case and entered the building once ▽, in some cases may contain radioactive material Considered. NISA do this or not water is flowing into the sea near the time of discharge, it will continue to monitor the presence of radioactive materials. For suspended solids flowed into the sea from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, but has confirmed that from 19th June 4 flood control work has begun investigation of the radioactive material is that it did not go so far. NISA is "When you work watering, that possibly from the building flows into the sea water containing radioactive material. and to have a profound effect on the amount of water is unlikely to continue to validate "I said.

5 radioactive materials detected

Tokyo Electric Power Company says some of the nuclear fuel at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has apparently been damaged, as higher levels of radioactive materials have been detected in the vicinity.

snip

Officials detected in the air 5 radioactive materials that are generated by nuclear fission.

The level of iodine 131 was 5.9 milibecquerels per cubic centimeter. That's about 6 times the permissible level for workers without protective masks.

The density of the other substances was also higher than usual, but within safety standards.

Grey smoke rises from Unit 3 of the tsunami-stricken Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Okumamachi, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, Monday, March 21, 2011. (Tokyo Electric Power Co.)

Japanese officials were forced to pull workers out of a disaster-ravaged nuclear power plant Monday for radiation safety reasons after unexplained grey smoke was spotted coming out of two reactor buildings.

It was the latest setback for officials trying to stabilize the troubled Fukushima Dai-ichi plant that has suffered explosions, fires and radiation leaks in several reactors since the massive earthquake and tsunami struck Japan on Mar. 11.

CTV's Tom Walters reported Monday that the first smoke was seen coming out of Dai-ichi's Unit 3 reactor building, but officials were unable to immediately identify the cause.
Smoke was later seen coming out of the Unit 2 reactor and remains under investigation.

This article says that the white smoke from unit 2 caused a temporary rise in the radiation readings. People on site were evacuated. Broken fuel rods in the cooling pool might be leaking some radioactive material.

Unit dose or two rising influence
22:29 March 22

21, white smoke rising from No. 2 in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, and then about a temporary rise in the west of Unit 2 of the radiation dose, Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency of the Ministry of Economy, wind from other times and showed that there is a related view.

In Unit 2 nuclear power plant first Fukushima, at around 20:06 pm May 21, found that the rising white smoke from the roof of the building containing the reactor, all the people working on the No. 4 from No. 1 evacuated to the interior. According to TEPCO, the radiation dose of about 1 km away near the main gate of the power plant west of Unit 2, but was microsievert 494 per hour for 40 minutes at 5:00 pm at 6:30 pm, 1 microsievert rose to 1932 per hour. Then the value is that it was 380 per hour at 10:00 pm microsievert started to fall again. Nuclear Safety Agency This is the white smoke and added that the possibility of water vapor evaporating the spent fuel pool, and that was blowing toward the main gate from the No. 2 at the time the wind showed that the view that the idea of white smoke came out due to the rise in the value of Unit 2 from the radiation dose to match the time zone. NISA is a broken fuel rods, as it may be leaking radioactive material into the pool, to be monitored closely.

Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency
Regarding the result of analyzing the samples from the seawater around
Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station of Tokyo Electric Power Co.
1. At 14:30 March 21th, Tokyo Electric Power Co.(TEPCO) took the samples of seawater at the coast line from about 100m south of the water discharge gates of Units 1 to 4 of Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) and carried out Radioactive Nuclide Analysis.
2. The result of the analysis was reported at 21:40 March 21th. It showed that the radioactive nuclides of Cobalt, Iodine and Cesium were detected as given in the table below.
3. Among those nuclides detected, Iodine-131, Cesium-134 and Cesium-137
exceeded ?the concentration criteria in the liquid effluents outside the
surrounding area given by the notification of radiation dose.?
4. Although the measured results exceeded the allowable criteria of concentration, considering the evacuation of the residents within 20-kilometer radius from the Fukushima Dai-ichi NPS and the current situation of usage of this ocean area, there is no immediate risk to human health.
5. We are asking Nuclear Security Commission (NSC) of Japan to assess the
measured results. However, we have only one survey point at the current
moment and NSC may be unable to present an appropriate assessment by this
data only. Therefore, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and
Technology will start the monitoring survey of the ocean and TEPCO will also
continue the survey.

Major radioactive nuclides detected/ Concentration of radioactive nuclide(Bq/cm3)/ Allowable concentration of radioactive nuclide in the liquid effluents(Bq/cm3)
Cobalt-58 /6.0 x 10^-2 /1.0 x 10^0 0.06 times the allowed amount
Iodine-131 /5.1 x 10^0 /4.0 x 10^-2 127.5 times the allowed amount
Iodine-132 /2.1 x 10^0 /3.0 x 10^0 0.7 times the allowed amount
Cesium-134 /1.5 x 10^0 /6.0 x 10^-2 250 times the allowed amount
Cesium-136 /2.1 x 10^-1/ 3.0 x 10^-1 0.7 times the allowed amount

High radiation detected 40km from nuclear plant

Japan's science ministry says radiation exceeding 400 times the normal level was detected in soil about 40 kilometers from the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The ministry surveyed radioactive substances in soil about 5 centimeters below the surface at roadsides on Monday.

The ministry found 43,000 becquerels of radioactive iodine-131 per kilogram of soil, and 4,700 becquerels of radioactive cesium-137 per kilogram about 40 kilometers west-northwest of the plant.

The science ministry says there is no environmental standard for radioactive substances in soil, and that it sees no problem at this time. Tuesday, March 22, 2011 19:59 +0900 (JST)
