Japan nuclear blast could be more deadly than Chernobyl, experts fear
Experts in Israel and abroad divided on scope of disaster at Japan's nuclear plants, as Japanese government hasn't provided accurate information regarding threat posed by explosions at Fukushima nuclear power plant.
By Yossi Melman

Since the Japanese government has not provided accurate information regarding the possible threat posed by the explosion at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, experts in Israel and abroad are divided on the scope of the disaster and the ramifications for the environment.

It appears that immediately after earthquake warnings were first heard, the Japanese authorities shut down all six reactors located in the affected region, which lies 250 kilometers north of the capital Tokyo, by cutting off the flow of electricity to the reactors. But the emergency generator, whose function is to provide power to the pump responsible for cooling the reactor, did not activate. As a result, the reactor's core began to heat up.

At the same time, radioactive materials and gases were emitted into the air, but measurements taken indicate that the amount was relatively minimal. The most dangerous elements discharged were iodine and cesium, two by-products of the nuclear fission process that takes place in nuclear plants. These are two relatively volatile compounds that can easily spread into the atmosphere.

Professor Uzi Even of Tel Aviv University, who in the past worked for the Israel Atomic Energy Commission, told Haaretz that these two compounds are extremely dangerous, which is why the Japanese government yesterday began distributing iodine tablets, which neutralize the threat of radioactive poisoning that primarily affects the thyroid gland.

Even recalled that several years ago, Israel had distributed such tablets to residents living in the vicinity of the nuclear reactor in Dimona in the event that dangerous materials leaked into the air. He also noted that another potential source of danger is the possibility that the measuring equipment used to gauge the heat levels in the reactor core could spin out of control as a result of a cut in power. In such a scenario, Japanese experts working to prevent a nuclear disaster would have trouble ascertaining the core's situation.

Hebrew University Professor Menachem Luria, an expert on air quality and poisoning, told Channel 2 on Saturday: "This is very worrying. There is no doubt that we have not seen anything like this in years, perhaps ever since nuclear experiments were conducted in the atmosphere in the 1950s. From what we can gather, this disaster is even more dangerous than Chernobyl, both from the standpoint of the population's exposure to radioactive material and the spread of radioactive contamination in the area."

Luria continued: "Once there is an uncontrollable heating up, the nuclear fuel undergoes a metamorphosis into the gaseous phase. Since we are talking about metals and solid items, they turn into particles that are capable of traveling great distances. They can wander thousands of kilometers."

If these gases are indeed emitted into the atmosphere in large quantities, the wind regime could carry them all the way to China, South Korea, and eastern Russia, or in the other direction, toward Hawaii and the west coast of the United States. The likelihood of this happening, though, is not high.

Experts are now positing two possible scenarios. This first scenario is a disaster on the scale of Chernobyl, where the reactor core melted and enormous quantities of radioactive fallout were discharged into the air before being propelled by the wind and harming civilians living at a relatively great distance from the reactor. Because the core melted, the steel and concrete seal, which was meant to protect the core and prevent dangerous material from being emitted into the air, could not withstand the pressure and collapsed. As a result, thousands of people were killed, though the exact number of deaths remains unknown to this day.

Wind direction monitored near quake-hit Japan nuclear plant

The wind over a Japanese nuclear plant that is leaking radiation will continue blowing from the south, which could affect residents north of the facility, an official at Japan's Meteorological Agency said on Sunday.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant, operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co's , is located about 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo on the country's northeast coast.

The wind will keep blowing from the south in the area from noon until early evening, the official said.

The direction of the wind is a key factor in judging possible damage to the environment from the radiation leaking from the plant, which was devastated on Friday by Japan's biggest earthquake on record and a subsequent tsunami.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said on its website that the weather in the area is likely to be clear on Sunday, with the maximum temperature of 15 Celsius (60 F).

Japan Earthquake Update (13 March 2011 13:35 CET)
Japanese authorities have informed the IAEA's Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) that venting of the containment of reactor Unit 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant started at 9:20 AM local Japan time of 13 March through a controlled release of vapour. The operation is intended to lower pressure inside the reactor containment.

Subsequently, following the failure of the high pressure injection system and other attempts of cooling the plant, injection of water first and sea water afterwards started. The authorities have informed the IAEA that accumulation of hydrogen is possible.

Japanese authorities have also informed the IAEA that the first (i.e., lowest) state of emergency at the Onagawa nuclear power plant has been reported by Tohoku Electric Power Company. The authorities have informed the IAEA that the three reactor units at the Onagawa nuclear power plant are under control.

As defined in Article 10 of Japan's Act on Special Measures Concerning Nuclear Emergency Preparedness, the alert was declared as a consequence of radioactivity readings exceeding allowed levels in the area surrounding the plant. Japanese authorities are investigating the source of radiation. The IAEA has offered its "Good Offices" to Japan to support the nation's response to the 11 March earthquake and tsunami. One IAEA capability intended to help member states during crises is the Response and Assistance Network (RANET). The network consists of nations that can offer specialized assistance after a radiation incident or emergency. Such assistance is coordinated by the IAEA within the framework of the Assistance Convention.

The IAEA continues to liaise with the Japanese authorities and is monitoring the situation as it evolves.

For nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture Fukushima Daiichi, Tokyo Electric Power, the site boundary radiation dose was measured as exceeding the standards of the country around 2:30 Thursday morning, according to the Nuclear Emergency Response Act , for the country "emergency" to inform the so-called "Article 15 Report," conducted. "Article 15 report criteria" is not 500 per hour microsievert, Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant near the site of the minutes to 20:02 am on 14 microsievert 751.2, or 2 minutes at 40 It is observed that microsievert 650. Then, the radiation dose is that drops below the reference. TEPCO has "raised the amount of radiation do not know why. Notable accidents and explosions is not happening," I said.

Radioactive leaks "very important" central Fukushima

Radioactive leaks "very important" at the explosion occurred on Saturday in the reactor building number one Fukushima I nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan, a region ravaged by a earthquake and tsunami, according to the Institute of Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN).

The Institute cites information provided by the French Embassy in Tokyo, adding that "There is only a few measures available today."

On Saturday, the Japanese news agency Kyodo, quoting a security committee, had indicated as a radioactivity level 1,000 times higher than normal was detected in the room control of reactor number one Fukushima I.

Japanese Earthquake Update (14 March 01:30 CET)

by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 5:38pm

Based on information provided by Japanese authorities, the IAEA can confirm the following information about the status of Units 1, 2 and 3 at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Unit 1 is being powered by mobile power generators on site, and work continues to restore power to the plant. There is currently no power via off-site power supply or backup diesel generators being provided to the plant. Seawater and boron are being injected into the reactor vessel to cool the reactor. Due to the explosion on 12 March, the containment building has been lost.

Unit 2 is being powered by mobile power generators on site, and work continues to restore power to the plant. There is currently neither off-site power supply nor backup diesel generators providing power to the plant. The reactor core is being cooled through reactor core isolation cooling, a procedure used to remove heat from the core. The current reactor water level is lower than normal but remains steady. The containment building is intact at Unit 2.

Unit 3 does not have off-site power supply nor backup diesel generators providing power to the plant. As the high pressure injection system and other attempts to cool the reactor core have failed, injection of water and boron into the reactor vessel has commenced. Water levels inside the reactor vessel increased steadily for a certain amount of time but readings indicating the water level inside the pressure vessel are no longer showing an increase. The reason behind this is unknown at this point in time. To relieve pressure, venting of the containment started on 13 March at 9:20AM local Japan time. Planning is underway to reduce the concentration of hydrogen inside the containment building. The containment building is intact at Unit 3.

The IAEA is seeking information about the status of spent fuel at the Daiichi plant.

Fukushima Daiichi Unit 3 nuclear power hydrogen explosion

26 min at 11 May 14 at 3 twitter tweet (click on the site leaves the NHK)

According to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency Ministry of Economy, 1 minute, 11 am, is that a hydrogen explosion in the No. 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Electric Power Company.

The NISA, if you are outdoors for local residents are urged to enter the building. Such explosions, which occurred in the No. 1 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in 12 days, an explosion of hydrogen accumulated on top of the reactor building, 吹Ki飛Bimashita the top of the building. It lowers the level of the Unit 3 reactor, because the rod is exposed, and know that you generate a large amount of hydrogen reacts with water vapor, was worried about the hydrogen explosion. NISA is "Even the top of the reactor exploded, covering the reactor containment did not affect" to this.
