More bird flu feared in Miyazaki

MIYAZAKI (Kyodo) The Miyazaki Prefectural Government said Tuesday that 191 chickens died at a poultry farm in the city of Miyazaki and that six of the seven dead birds tested positive for avian influenza in a preliminary exam.

Officials decided to launch more detailed examinations on the six dead birds to confirm whether they were infected with bird flu. It would be the prefecture's seventh outbreak.

In Tottori Prefecture, meanwhile, officials said the highly virulent strain of the H5N1 virus was detected in two wild birds that tested positive for avian flu in earlier tests...

MIYAZAKI, Japan, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Authorities in southwestern Japan began destroying some 190,000 chickens Wednesday to contain a new outbreak of bird flu.

The incident was the seventh in Miyazaki Prefecture and the 10th in Japan this winter, Kyodo News reported.

The disease was confirmed Monday by examining six chickens at a farm after 191 birds died there...

Miyazaki culls 154,000 chickens at latest bird flu-hit farm

MIYAZAKI, Japan (Kyodo) -- The Miyazaki prefectural government culled about 154,000 chickens Wednesday at a poultry farm in the city of Miyazaki after confirming the seventh bird flu outbreak in the southwestern Japan prefecture this winter.

Aichi, Shimane and Kagoshima prefectures have so far managed to contain infections to one farm each, while the total number of chickens culled in Miyazaki Prefecture has risen to over 700,000.

In a fresh development, nine of 38 dead chickens at a poultry farm in the city of Oita, located north of Miyazaki Prefecture, were confirmed to have infected with a highly contagious avian influenza, the Oita prefectural government said, adding that some 8,100 chickens at the affected farm will be culled...

Bird flu virus detected at Miyazaki poultry farm

Dead chickens found at a poultry farm in Miyazaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan, have tested positive for bird flu.
This is the 12th outbreak of avian influenza at poultry farms in the country this winter, and the 8th in the prefecture.
On Thursday and Friday, 94 chickens were found dead at a farm in Takachiho town....

Eighth farm in Miyazaki hit by bird flu

MIYAZAKI (Kyodo) Miyazaki Prefecture said Saturday that birds found dead at a poultry farm in Takachiho were confirmed infected with a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu virus, the eighth case in the prefecture and 12th in Japan this winter.

The farm raises about 40,000 broiler chickens, and prefectural officials started culling them and another 17,000 chickens at related facilities. A ban on shipping chickens and eggs was imposed for a radius of 10 km from the farm....

...In a related development, the Nagasaki Prefectural Government said Saturday a virulent strain of bird flu was found in a mandarin duck that was found dead Friday at a pond in the city of Nagasaki together with two other ducks.

The National Institute for Environmental Studies was asked to conduct a more extensive test. The highly pathogenic virus was detected in a mandarin duck found dead at the same pond Jan. 31....

Miyazaki suspects 11th bird flu outbreak

Japan's southwestern prefecture of Miyazaki suspects bird flu has hit another poultry farm. If confirmed, it would be the prefecture's eleventh outbreak this winter.

About 140 chickens were found dead at a poultry farm over the weekend. The prefecture's preliminary tests on 3 dead chickens show they may have been infected with a bird flu virus.....

11th bird flu outbreak confirmed in Miyazaki Pref.

Miyazaki Prefecture in southwestern Japan says it has confirmed a bird flu outbreak at a poultry farm in Miyazaki City.

The outbreak is the eleventh in the prefecture this winter. The poultry farm in Takaoka Town in Miyazaki City is raising about 33,000 chickens.
About 140 chickens were found dead at the farm over the weekend. The prefecture says it detected the H5 strain of the bird flu virus in 3 dead chickens....

33,000 chickens culled in Miyazaki

MIYAZAKI (Kyodo) Around 33,000 broiler chickens were culled Sunday at a poultry farm in Kadogawa, Miyazaki Prefecture, after the 13th case of bird flu in the prefecture was confirmed the previous day, prefectural officials said.

Sunday's cull brought total chickens slaughtered at poultry farms in the prefecture to around 990,000 since the first infection was confirmed in the city of Miyazaki on Jan. 22.

In total, 22 cases of bird flu infections have been confirmed at poultry farms across the country, including the 13 cases in Miyazaki Prefecture.
