Asylum applications in Japan up 85% in first half of 2011
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Asylum applications in Japan during the first half of 2011 increased 85 percent from a year earlier, rising to an estimated 870 from 471, according to a report released in Geneva on Tuesday by the U.N. refugee agency.....
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says people seeking asylum in industrialized countries rose by 17 percent in the first half of this year, compared to the same period last year.......

Record high no. of refugee applications filed with Japan in 2011
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A record high 1,867 foreigners applied for refugee status in Japan last year, about 1.6 times the figure in the previous year, but the number of applications approved stood at just 21, down from 39 in 2010, the Justice Ministry said Friday.

Myanmar refugees optimistic about new life in Japan
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Eighteen Myanmar refugees consisting of four families, who arrived in Japan from a camp in Thailand last year, completed a language and cultural acclimation program Friday and expressed hope for a new life in Japan.
