Japan - 3 newborns infected with 'echovirus 11' die in Tokyo between the summer and fall of 2024

TOKYO -- Three newborns infected with echovirus 11 (E11), which causes the common cold, died of acute liver failure and other illnesses in Tokyo between the summer and fall of 2024, a survey by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) has revealed.
The Japanese Pediatric Society is calling for caution, as cases of newborns developing severe hepatitis or dying as a result of E11 infection have been reported.

According to the NIID, between August and November last year, three babies were hospitalized at one or more medical facilities in Tokyo with symptoms such as difficulty drinking breast milk, vomiting and becoming jaundiced, and they later died after suffering acute hepatitis and other illnesses. E11 was detected in all cases. Meanwhile, two medical institutions in Kobe reported cases of E11 in four newborns, all of whom were discharged from the facilities. ...
