JAMMU, Sept 4: Three cases of swine flu have been reported so far this year in Jammu region and out of them, one died few days ago here at Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu.
A 43-year-old woman has become the first victim of swine flu in Jammu, a health official said, adding, the woman identified as Asha Rani, wife of Ashok Kumar, resident of Pounichak (Jammu), who was also a diabetics patient, was admitted in GMCH Jammu with swine flu symptoms.
He said that few days ago, the woman died in the hospital. ?When her samples were tested, she was found to be positive for H1N1 virus?, Other two cases are of Udhampur.

Another suspect patient succumbed to the special isolation Swine Flu Ward at GMC late on Sunday night. He was admitted to Special Ward on Sunday evening after giving primary treatment from the Emergency. His condition deteriorated and he died at 2 o'clock in the night. His samples were sent to the hospital's microbiology laboratory for examination. With this, three suspected patients have died in special isolation ward in the last four days.
It is said that an 18-year-old man from Kathua was shifted to the Isolation Ward of Special Swine Flu on Sunday evening from the GMC Emergency. Here he was given a Tamiflu tablet with other treatments, but his blood pressure continued to rise and due to other problems, he died late in the night. So far two young men have died in such suspicious cases.

On September 22, a woman with a 25-year-old man from Rajori resident in this ward had died. Officially, two people have died since the swine flu H1N1 virus in the Jammu division. Nine people have been positive from swine flu virus in different districts of the division. In GMC's microbiology laboratory, so far 52 victims have been sent samples, of which 43 have been negative.

According to official sources, 24-year-old Rayat, son of Mohammad Mushtaq, a resident of Jamola, Budhal, District Rajouri has fallen prey to the deadly disease.

A 45-year-old man died of H1N1 influenza while a pregnant woman is critical due to the same infection at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, even as experts fear spike in the cases amid government?s failure to make the testing and isolation facilities for such patients operational.
A source told Greater Kashmir that a man, aged 45, from Budgam district was brought to the SKIMS on October 19 and died four days later. ?He suffered from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and was being treated at the surgical intensive care unit,? the source said. ?He had tested positive for the H1N1 influenza during the course of treatment.?

A source said that a female patient who had tested positive for the H1N1 influenza died at SKIMS on Tuesday morning. The woman, 24, was pregnant. She hailed from peripheries of Srinagar and was supported on a ventilator for two days.

Severeity on Swine Flu

It is right to set up a task force to prevent swine flu in Kashmir. With this, the severity of the state government's handling of swine flu can be estimated, but the irony is that this activity is not visible in Jammu. Seven people have died unofficially from swine flu in the state. Of these, three belong to the Jammu division, but the management done so far for the prevention of flu is inadequate. Before this flu can take the form of epidemic, the Health Department should consider all measures to protect against the disease infection. The Government should not forget that in the year 2015, 26 deaths were due to swine flu in Jammu and Kashmir and more than 70 patients had swine flu confirmed.

Even seeing the outbreak of swine flu, the state high court had directed the government to set up laboratory in Srinagar and Jammu. The irony is that the Laboratory has not yet been established on the directions of the court. The Health Department is responsible for sending doctors and paramedical staff to different areas of the state so that they make people aware of the problem. Also advise people to take the vaccine of influenza as far as possible. This flu spreads quickly to patients suffering from kidney and asthma with children and elderly. With this, the government should also set up a task force in Kashmir with Jammu and Kashmir for the prevention of this flu.

If the flu is spreading once, it will be difficult to stop it. The swine flu virus survives for a long time in cold weather. When the temperature rises, it ends itself. The cold season is going to start now and in Kashmir the winter season will remain till March. In such a situation, the health department will have to make arrangements for medicines and vaccines in order to deal with any emergencies. People should also check that the flu symptoms are detected.

The woman, admitted to SKIMS with respiratory distress, was suffering from H1N1 influenza, a doctor said, quoting the patient?s investigation reports. He said that the woman, a resident of Budgam and an employee with the technical education department suffered acute respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis.

SKIMS hushing up swine flu deaths, says DAK

Srinagar: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Saturday said authorities at SK Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) are hushing up swine flu deaths and cases.

?That puts the whole population at risk of a deadly outbreak,? said President DAK and flu expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan in a communiqu?.

?While it is mandatory to report and inform public about these deaths and cases, health officials are concealing them,? he said.

DAK President said a middle-aged woman who was working as Warden at Government Polytechnic College for Women died due to swine flu infection at SKIMS on November 01.

?Neither the family nor the college was informed about the cause of death, he said adding the death certificate issued had no mention of swine flu.?

Dr Nisar said it was only after the principal of the college uploaded a Facebook post that people came to know about it.

[h=1]50 yr-old succumbs to H1N1, toll 6[/h] A patient who was undergoing treatment for H1N1 influenza at SK Institute of Medical Sciences here succumbed to the viral infection today taking the toll of influenza deaths recorded at the hospital to six this season.
A 50 year old male patient who was admitted to the institute on 5 November breathed his last this morning. The patient hailed from Ganderbal and had tested positive for H1N1 influenza during the course of treatment, a doctor said.

Srinagar, Nov 18: At least seven people have died of H1N1 influenza at the SK Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in the last one month, with experts predicting surge in the viral disease in the coming months in Kashmir.
Director SKIMS, Dr A G Ahangar, said that 24 patients including three doctors of the institute have been tested positive of HINI disease so far.
?Twelve people have been discharged, five are being treated at the SKIMS, while seven died in the last around one month,? he told a presser.
However, he said that those who lost their lives were also suffering from co morbidity-diseases like cancer, leukemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), old age, diabetes, weak immune system, and hypertension.
?The latest death took place on November 16,? he said.
The Director said that there was no need to get panicked by the H1N1 influenza.

Two more patients have died of H1N1 influenza at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences here in the past two days, taking the death toll due to the viral infection to 16 in Kashmir so far, an official source said on Sunday.
Two male patients who had been admitted to the hospital had tested positive for the H1N1 influenza and died during the past week, the source said.
One of the male patients from Srinagar, aged around 60, was admitted for brain hemorrhage and suffered a respiratory failure. During the course of investigations, it was found that he was infected with H1N1 influenza virus and he eventually died at the intensive care unit, said a doctor. Another patient, a 50-year-old man?also from Srinagar?who was admitted at the SKIMS isolation ward died during the past week, the doctor said.

Confirming the deaths, official sources at SKIMS had told loca;l newspaper Rising Kashmir that three patients have died in last three weeks.
?Two women ? an 80-year-old and another 90 years of age ? both residents of Budgam were cases of comorbidities. Both were admitted to the hospital and died. A 41-year-old male patient of Ganderbal also died,? they said.
Sources explained that two more patients including a woman died of H1N1 influenza in the hospital on December 9.
SKIMS has till date received at least 181 patients with Swine Flu symptoms in last two months from across the valley and 81 have been discharged after recovering fully.
?Six H1N1 patients are presently undergoing treatment at SKIMS,? sources said.

A teenager died of H1N1 influenza at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura on Tuesday taking the toll of people who died due to Swine flu to 22.
Official sources said that a 17-year-old patient tested positive for H1N1 influenza last week and was also suffering from sepsis. With the fresh death, the toll due to H1N1 influenza in Kashmir has risen to 22 this season.
In last two months 121 cases including six doctors treating patients were admitted in SKIMS with Swine Flu symptoms. Of them 90 have been discharged after their recovery. At least 10 patients who have been tested positive for H1N1 influenza are undergoing treatment at the institute? which is the lone hospital treating such patients in the Valley.
