A second death associated with the Influenza A (H1N1) virus has been reported.

Minister of Health Rudyard Spencer and senior officials of the Health Ministry, on Friday afternoon briefed Prime Minister Bruce Golding on Jamaica's current situation as it relates to the virus commonly called swine flu.

The person, who falls within the high risk group, died at the University Hospital of the West Indies on Thursday and had underlying medical conditions which caused complications.

Six more cases of Influenza A(H1N1), including this latest fatality, have been reported, bringing the total to 39.

Of the six new cases, three are from Kingston, one from St. Catherine and the other two are still being investigated.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Golding committed further resources for the Ministry to continue its public health interventions.

The Prime Minister instructed the Health Minister to prepare a submission for Cabinet on Monday morning, that will outline a comprehensive plan to effectively manage the situation.

Jamaica recorded its first Influenza A fatality on Monday July 6.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Health is urging persons with flu-like symptoms who may be among the high risk group for complications associated with Influenza A(H1N1) infection, to seek medical attention immediately.

This group includes persons with chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity and asthma, pregnant women and children under five years old.
