Dengue crisis at ‘Busta’ - Deaths from mosquito-borne disease spike at children’s hospital

Dengue mortality at the Bustamante Hospital for Children has jumped by more than 30 per cent this month, with five deaths being recorded compared to 15 over the previous 22 months.

There were 20 dengue deaths confirmed, suspected or under investigation at Bustamante between January 1, 2018 and November 7 this year, the children’s hospital racking up the highest number of fatalities among public health facilities. St James’ Cornwall Regional Hospital is second with 15 deaths; followed by Mandeville Regional, with 11, and St Ann’s Bay Hospital, 10. Victoria Jubilee, a maternity hospital, is the only secondary or tertiary public medical facility that has not recorded a single dengue death. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jacqueline Bisasor-Mckenzie says, there have been 63 dengue related deaths between 2018 and November 21 of this year.

Jamaica: 9 year old dies of dengue – Mother makes plea to parents not to delay treatment

(JAMAICA GLEANER) – When nine-year-old Naylia Lewis complained about a slight headache last week Monday, little did her mother, Kerry Ann Davis, know that the next few days would be her daughter’s last.

Lewis died on Saturday from what was presumed to be severe dengue with shock, according to her death certificate.

She would have turned 10 years old on January 30.

Naylia is one of dozens of Jamaicans who have been killed by the mosquito-borne disease since 2018 in a regional epidemic of record proportions.

In Jamaica, there were at least 44 deaths between January 1 and November 7, 2019, and more than 10,500 notifications, more than half classified as suspected, presumed or confirmed – the latest data provided by the Ministry of Health and Wellness. There were more than 2.7 million cases in the Americas in 2019 alone...

(JAMAICA GLEANER) – More than 81 Jamaicans have died in the worst dengue fever outbreak to have hit the island in a generation, but data provided by the Ministry of Health and Wellness show that incidence of the mosquito-borne disease appeared to fall sharply over the last two months.

There were 1,341 notifications of suspected, presumed, and confirmed cases of dengue recorded in October, but those numbers plunged to 833 in November and 294 in December. October’s cases were the second greatest incidence last year as 1,960 notifications were issued in January...
