JAKARTA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Jakarta administration plans to force traditional-market poultry sellers out of the city in an effort to prevent outbreaks of avian influenza in the capital, the Jakarta Globe on Monday quoted an official as saying.

"As we are closing down their businesses, they will have to find alternative ventures," said Edy Setiarto, head of Jakarta's Husbandry, Fisheries and Maritimes Agency.

Vendors would not be allowed to sell live chickens in or to traditional markets by April 2010.

He declined to say whether the city would compensate vendors for business losses. Only two poultry-processing plants, both run by the agency in Cakung and Rawa Kepiting, East Jakarta, will be permitted to distribute chicken meat to traditional markets in the city.

"The move was part of measures to implement a 2007 poultry-restriction bylaw aimed at controlling the sale of poultry in Jakarta," he said. The bylaw took form in an attempt to prevent future outbreaks of bird flu and other diseases in the city.

From what I hear (from the Jakarta's Husbandry, Fisheries and Maritimes Agency.), they will not do anything UNTIL 2010.
I had spoken to a person at the department, and he said yes, we will restrict them...in 2010.
Wonder how many more has to die for them to start realizing that they have to start now? With the 113th victim from Jakarta itself.

Kebayoran Baru to be free from slaughterhouses

JAKARTA: The South Jakarta Farm, Fisheries and Food Security Agency will close down all fowl slaughterhouses in Kebayoran Baru next month to prevent bird flu.

"We hope there will be no more fowl slaughterhouses there by April, so the area can be our pilot project in creating a bird-flu free area," agency head Chaidir Taufik told beritajakarta.com on Tuesday.

Kebayoran Baru currently has 15 slaughterhouses that butcher some 12,000 fowl daily, the agency said.

A 2007 bylaw on fowl distribution in Jakarta stipulates all fowl slaughterhouses in the city must be relocated to Pulogadung, Cakung and Rawa Kepiting in East Jakarta.

Violators face a maximum prison sentence of three months or fines of Rp 50 million (US$4,166). -JP

I have been trying to search the local (Indonesian) language newspapers for similar articles, and I have not found any.
Let's just hope, they are not posting the above news for show, to appease the FOREIGN media/ audience/ pressure.
