Father ruled out in latest cluster of Indonesian bird flu cases

(CP) - An Indonesian man investigated as a possible case of avian flu in the latest family cluster of infections does not have the H5N1 virus, a senior health ministry official said Sunday.
The man, whose wife died last week and whose son is battling the disease, will soon be released from hospital, said Dr. Nyoman Kandun, Indonesia's director general of disease control and environmental health.
"The husband is negative," Kandun said from Jakarta. "Only the son is positive."
"He (the husband) will be discharged tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. He's all right now."
Kandun said three rounds of testing on the man, 46, failed to produce a positive test.
Specimens were also taken for testing from a number of other family members and close contacts.
"All of them are negative," Kandun said.
The family lived in Tangerang, in Banten Province. They recently purchased, slaughtered and ate chickens believed to be infected with H5N1. The man's wife, 38, died on Jan. 11. Their son, 18, tested positive for the virus.
After several months of no human cases, Indonesia has seen a resurgence of infections since the start of the new year. To date this year the country has confirmed five cases: the mother and son; a 14-year-old boy from West Jakarta; a 22-year-old woman from Banten Province and a 27-year-old woman from South Jakarta.
All but the 18-year-old died last week.
Kandun said Indonesia has recorded 79 H5N1 cases since its first human infections in July 2005. Of those, 61 people have died.
Confirmation of the latest two cases came on the weekend and had not yet been incorporated into the World Health Organization official case tally on Sunday. The agency lists 265 cases and 159 deaths across 10 countries since H5N1 flared up in Asia in late 2003.

In the first paragraph Beno appear to be person from Pondok Aren, the Tangerang Regency, Banten who raised chickens and let them roam about.

In the second paragraph Beno is referring to a location and then a person who ate chicken. Can someone clear this up? Of the two positive bird flu cases mentioned "Ina Sholati and Sri Wahyuni" I believe the first is referencing Ina Sotali who was part of a recognized human cluster from Tangerang, Baten, Java, in October of 2005. I am not sure who Sri Wahyuni is.

JAKARTA, Jan 15 (Reuters) - One of two hospitals designated to treat bird flu cases in the Indonesian capital has been overwhelmed with patients with symptoms of the disease amid a spike of new cases this year, a doctor said on Monday.

Indonesia has seen four fatalities this year after a six-week lull in cases, taking the number of human deaths from bird flu in the country to 61, the highest in the world.

Nine people with bird flu symptoms are being treated at Jakarta's Persahabatan hospital and its isolation rooms can no longer accept any more patients, said Muchtar Ichsan, the head of the hospital's bird flu ward.

A 5-year old girl was being treated at the intensive care unit, he said.

"If we get more patients, we will send them to Sulianti Saroso," Ichsan told Reuters, referring the country's main bird flu treatment centre in North Jakarta.

Seven of the patients at Persahabatan came from Bekasi, a town east of Jakarta, said Muhammad Nadirin, a doctor at the bird flu information centre.

An 18-year-old man being treated in Persahabatan has been confirmed to have bird flu after his mother died of the disease on Thursday.

The man's father, from Serpong in west Java, was also being treated for similar symptoms but two tests found he did not have the deadly virus. More tests will be conducted on the father.

Nyoman Kandun, director general of communicable disease control at the health ministry, said on Saturday the positive test of the son signalled a cluster case but there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the virus so far.

The largest known cluster of human bird flu cases worldwide occurred in May 2006 in the Karo district of North Sumatra province, where as many as seven people in an extended family died. The cluster triggered fears the virus had mutated into a form that could spread easily between people.

Bird flu is endemic in around half of Indonesia's 33 provinces and the vast, developing country has struggled to contain the disease.

Millions of backyard chickens live in close proximity to humans and health education campaigns have often been patchy and rules difficult to enforce with the country's power structure increasingly devolved to the provinces.

Indonesian officials have, however, said they have made progress in their efforts to fight bird flu.

Jakarta -- MIOL: Three again the patient suspect bird flu that was treated in RS the Friendship, Jakarta, on Monday (15/1) was permitted to come home because the bird flu negative and his condition were stated was healthy.
Three children who were permitted to come home this was Muhammad Zulfikri, 8, Siti Fatimah, 6, as well as Hamdani, 9.

A 22-year-old woman from South Jakarta developed symptoms on 6 January 2007 and died on 12 January 2007. Investigations into the source of her exposure found reports of bird deaths near her home in the days prior to symptom onset.

The 18-year-old son of the 37-year-old woman from Tangerang City, Banten Province has now also been confirmed as infected with H5N1 avian influenza. He remains in hospital in a critical condition. Of the 79 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 61 have been fatal.
