Does this mean there are 8 people in hospital? Boy 14, woman 37, plus 6 suspect?

Two Indonesians have been hospitalized in less than a week with H5N1 avian influenza infections, the country?s first in more than a month, according to news services.

The Jakarta Post reported today that the H5N1 virus is suspected in 6 other patients who are awaiting test results.

Re: Jakarta Cluster

Here is my take of the cases, a slightly different presentation.

What we seem to be sure about:

Two locally confirmed human H5N1 cases that appear to have no connection except that they are treated in the same hospital, Friendship Hospital, Jakarta East. Five suspected cases associated with one of the confirmed cases are also being treated.

A. Ramli or Randi or Randy or RN, 14(M), confirmed, contact with ducks, hospitalized Jan 5, improving but still on respirator. Onset of symptoms on January 1, 2007.

Five associated cases: One man/two women/three children?
Sometimes reported as as mother and brother and three neighbors. Ages, sex, and family relationships are uncertain. Ramli may be one of the neighbors. Onset dates and condition not available. All of these individuals, including Ramli, have been reported as being from Rawalele region, Kalideres, West Jakarta or possibly Rawabebek region, Angke, Jakarta North.

The country's latest case may have been infected by a diseased bird. The woman slaughtered a chicken she bought from a market, Kandun said.

A 14-year-old boy from western Jakarta tested positive for H5N1 on Jan. 7 after he had been in contact with a dead duck. Indonesia, the world's fourth-

Indonesia confirms 76th human bird flu case

JAKARTA (AFP) - A woman undergoing hospital treatment in Indonesia has bird flu, the country's second confirmed case of the feared disease this year and its 76th overall, a senior health official has said.

"The woman, 37 years, come from Serpong and had become ill after cooking and eating a chicken she had bought live at a local market on December 30," government health official I Nyoman Kandun told AFP Tuesday.

A 14-year-old boy undergoing treatment at the same hospital has also been declared to be infected with bird flu.

Kandun said five other patients showing bird flu symptoms were being monitored but tests on their samples had not yet been completed.

Indonesia has recorded 57 confirmed bird flu deaths, the highest in the world so far.

The H5N1 virus strain of the bird flu has killed more than 150 people worldwide since late 2003, and triggered the mass slaughter of tens of millions of poultry. There are fears it could mutate into a form that could cause a human flu pandemic.

Officials had said the country's strategy of vaccinating poultry and increasing public awareness appeared to be paying off and that Indonesia was aiming at zero cases of human bird flu this year.
