Medication Distributed at the Bank?

RIPLEY -- Health officials say it is just a matter of time until the world will have to deal with a pandemic flu.

That would mean local health departments would have to scramble to mass distribute medication to treat and prevent the illness that was spreading.

Tuesday the Jackson County Health Department tested the possibility of using a bank drive through to do just that. "Our staff and volunteers wouldn't be exposed to sick people and people won't have to get out of their vehicles," said Wendy Casto with the Jackson County Health Department. "They'll just drive through pick up the medication and be on their way."

They didn't hand out actual medicine.

People participating in the drill received candy, a thermometer and a pamphlet.

Very sensible - as long as those without cars are also factored in.

Re: Jackson Co. WV: Medication Distributed at the Bank?

They were. Not only were those in cars serve, but walk-up individuals and bicyclists were as well. To my knowledge, this was the first drill of its kind held in our State where medicine was distributed utilizing a drive-through bank facility. This exercise allowed emergency response personnel to maintain a safe distance from the public who may be contaminated with a virus. There were nurses, a doctor, law enforcement and other local volunteers on hand dressed in full protection gear to handle the event.

The public entering the drive-through were given a form to complete with their name, address, birthday and a question asking if they were diabetic. They could also complete a form for other occupants in their vehicle or for family members or friend who were sick or unable to travel. Actual medicine was not handed out, rather health care officials within the drive-through facility analyzed the request forms and dispensed the appropriate dosage of faux medicine based upon certain criteria (plain or peanut M&Ms if you were an adult and not diabetic; sugar free Hershey bar if you were diabetic; and Mini M&Ms if you were a child).

The drill lasted for 2 hours. 61 vehicles passed through our drive-through facility between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. and 304 doses of medicine (candy) were distributed. Overall, we considered the drill a success and improvement lessons were learned.

in addition, let them all walk/drive through a desinfection-bath

Re: Jackson Co. WV: Medication Distributed at the Bank?

How common are drive-through banks - or other suitable buildings in most areas? I live in the UK and the only drive-through of any kind in my area is one small take-away with a single lane but I would have thought it simple enough to erect booths in a supermarket car park or similar. Having said that I live in a village and all the supermarkets are only accessible to those with a car as they are not generally in a town but in out of town retail parks as 90% of the supermarkets land is not store but car park.

Re: Jackson Co. WV: Medication Distributed at the Bank?

you could convert them to "drive through" in a pandemic

(with not so much effort/cost, I assume)

Re: Jackson Co. WV: Medication Distributed at the Bank?

I'm located between 2 small towns of populations under 2500. One has 4 banks with drive-throughs and the other has 2. A larger town a half hour away, with a population of 55,000, has many drive-throughs. Now some of the grocery stores with pharmacies are adding them for convenience also. Many of our drugstores have them.

I suspect Gs is correct in that they probably could be added fairly easily and at not too much cost. A sliding window, a countertop and an automated drawer, and they would be good to go.
