Abstract
We isolated and characterized a highly pathogenic H5N6 avian influenza virus in wild birds during avian influenza virus surveillance in 2020. The GG1/H5N6 virus was highly pathogenic. Several mutations were identified related to the pathogenicity and transmission ability in mammals. Its continued circulation poses a significant potential health threat to poultry and human populations.
