Cytospin-enhanced immunofluorescence and impact of sample quality on diagnosis of novel swine-origin (H1N1) influenza virus.

Landry ML, Ferguson D. - Clinical Virology Laboratory, Yale New Haven Hospital and Department of Laboratory Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT.

Nasopharyngeal swabs (n=601) from 278 adult and 323 pediatric patients were tested within 24 hrs of receipt by cytospin-enhanced immunofluorescence and real-time RT-PCR using the CDC assay. Cytospin-DFA detected 230 (84.6%) of 272 swine influenza A PCR positives overall, but 25 (92.6%) of 27 positives in patients <5 years old.
