INFORMATION NOTE

SUBJECT: Yellow fever epidemic in Abidjan.

Confirmed cases of Yellow Fever have been detected in C?te d'Ivoire mainly
in the autonomous district of Abidjan.

A total of 89 cases including one death were recorded.

In accordance with the International Health Regulations, the declaration of the epidemic has
been made to the World Health Organization.

An epidemiological investigation was also conducted to assess the risk
spread and guide the control strategy.

Given this situation, the following measures were taken:

- Elimination of breeding sites (old tires, canaries, flowerpots, objects
abandoned ...)

- Control of adult mosquitoes (indoor and extra-domiciliary spraying,
sleep under mosquito net impregnated with insecticide, put anti
mosquitoes on doors and windows of houses).

- Vaccination of persons living in immediate surroundings of patients
to break the chain of transmission.

This epidemic occurs in the context of a dengue epidemic in Abidjan. Fever
yellow and dengue are viral diseases transmitted by the same mosquito
called Aedes. Therefore, the vector control measures that are put
to deal with dengue also remain valid for the epidemic
current yellow fever.

The Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene recommends that unvaccinated persons
be vaccinated against yellow fever in health centers or in the antennas of the
National Institute of Public Hygiene.

Posted on Tuesday August 13, 2019 | AIP

Abidjan- "No case of yellow fever has been detected for three weeks" contrary to the rumor of a yellow fever epidemic in C?te d'Ivoire, reassured Tuesday in Abidjan, the director general of the National Institute of Public Hygiene (INHP), Prof Beni? Bi Vroh Joseph at a press conference.

According to Pr Vroh, this satisfactory assessment should be attributed to the good immunity in Abidjan induced by previous immunization campaigns combined with intensive vector control carried out in the fight against dengue fever.

On July 5, 2019, the Pasteur Institute of C?te d'Ivoire (IPCI) confirmed cases of yellow fever, based on blood samples collected as part of the fight against Dengue fever. A total of 89 cases including one case of death were recorded during the period from December 2018 to July 2019.

After an investigation carried out jointly by the National Institute of Public Hygiene, Pastoral Institute of C?te d'Ivoire (IPCI), the coordinating director of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) and the WHO, all the patients of the different cases mentioned above have been declared cured.
