Meningitis kills 11 in Ivory Coast

At least 11 people have died from meningitis in the past three days in the Ivory Coast.

There were 40 reported cases in four departments across country during the month of February, 2012.

People are scrambling to access vaccinations for their families.

The ministry of health has declared the outbreaks in the Kouto and Tengrela regions as epidemics, and are providing free vaccinations in both locations through mobile health teams...

CHF 61,402 has been allocated from the IFRC?s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the National Society in delivering immediate assistance to 254,050 households. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Summary On the 9th of January, an outbreak of meningococcal meningitis was reported in the districts in Central and Northern Cote d'Ivoire. According to the National Institute of Public Hygiene, the epidemic was initially limited to only two locations; Tengrela and Bouak?, but has now affected almost all districts in the North (Tengrela, Boundiali, Korhogo, Ferke, Seguela, Bouna) as well as in Bandama Valley Region in central Cote d?Ivoire. By week 5 of 2012, the Institute reports 39 cases, including 6 deaths.

In some localities in northern C?te d'Ivoire such as Kouto, there has been a sharp increase in the number of reported cases from week 2 to week 4 of 2012. The Red Cross of Cote d?Ivoire (CRCI) has drawn on technical support from the West Coast Regional Representation of IFRC to develop a plan of action to scale up CRCI?s humanitarian assistance to the affected communities. It involves orientation of volunteers to enable them to carry out social mobilization activities in support of the national meningitis vaccination campaign.

This operation is expected to be implemented over 1 month, and will therefore be completed by March 2012; a Final Report will be made available three months after the end of the operation (by 31st June 2012).

Meningitis is still prevalent in western Côte d'Ivoire.
Since the beginning of the year, 83 cases of meningitis, including 11 deaths were reported in health districts in western countries. The most affected districts are Duékoué (24 cases with 0 deaths) and Toulepleu (23 cases including 6 deaths).

As the epidemic threshold has not yet been reached, no vaccination campaign
against the disease was undertaken in the western part of the country, unlike the north, where a vaccination campaign was conducted from February 16 to 19 by the Ministry of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS, with support from WHO for approximately 160,000 people aged two (2) years and over in two health districts (Tengrela and Kouto). However, with support from the World Health (WHO), local health authorities had begun in early March:
· The awareness to the notification of any suspected case of meningitis;
· The distribution of the standard definition of meningitis to all staff of health;
· The active case in the community in collaboration with community health workers;
· The availability of health workers needed to drugs the proper management of cases according to national protocol.
