In Lombardy, 60 communes are under specialised supervision. The alarm
has been raised for West Nile virus, the disease [virus] can be
transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes and in severe cases can
cause meningitis. Last year [2009], in 2 months, August and
September, West Nile fever [virus] infected 78 people and 3 died, of
which 2 were residents in Ferrara and one in Mantua.

The virus is exploding and although kept under observation in Emilia
Romagna, it is migrating westward, and has reached Lombardy. An
article in Eurosurveillance of 22 April [2010] takes stock of the
situation: the European health authorities show what are the areas to
be monitored. The Ministry says that the ASL areas [local health
areas in Italy] covered are those comprised between Mantua, Cremona,
and Brescia. The reservoirs of the virus are wild birds and
mosquitoes. Most people infected shows no symptoms, 20 percent had
mild symptoms: nausea, vomiting, swollen lymph nodes. The more severe
symptoms, affecting 1 percent of those who are ill, are convulsions,
paralysis, or encephalitis.

[It is not clear if the "virus exploding" means detection in
mosquitoes only, or if human cases are occurring this year (2010).
With continued presence in this part of northern Italy, one wonders
if West Nile virus has become endemic there.

Re: Italy - West Nile Virus - 2010

Since Italy has discontinued its reporting of West Nile Virus infection among equines to OIE, it is not clear to the public in general how this disease has spread and the geographical dispersion in northern regions.

Yesterday, the prime time television news headlines program (TG1) reported the West Nile Fever issues to this audience attention, citing mosquitoes bites protection as crucial to avoid human infection.

It is a rare instance of public health message and thus I think the problem is real and health authorities enough worried.

However, the source of ProMed post (ie il Giornale daily newspaper) IS NOT a reliable source of information because involved in Italian prime minister (and il Giornale owner) political propaganda and usually committed to scandalistic and derogatory articles and commentaries about oppositors.

This is obviously an opinion of mine and cannot represent the position of this site and those of other members/editors/directors.

An authoritative source of information about West Nile Fever in Italy is the CNESP (Centro Nazionale di Epidemiologia, Sorveglianza e Promozione della Salute), and a web page is dedicated to this disease at EpiCentro site (http://www.epicentro.iss.it/problemi/westNile/documenti.asp).

I invite readers and contributors to visit the page (in Italian Language) for more informations and details.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Some comprehensive data should be given to better explain the
newspaper report on the West Nile situation in Lombardy - North Italy.

West Nile virus [WNV] occurred, mainly in horses and wild birds, in
Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna (North Italy) in the fall of 2008, that
is, 10 years after the previous outbreak, which occurred in 1998 in
Tuscany. These outbreaks were recorded during the national monitoring
program based on active and passive surveillance on horses as well as
wild bird and entomological surveillance.

In 2009, WNV reappeared in the same area and spread to neighbouring
areas, involving the same species (horses and wild birds). Some human
cases were also recorded.

The monitoring surveillance programme of 2010 has just started and
till now has not detected any positivity for WNV in mosquitoes,
horses, or wild birds.
Anyway we can not exclude viral identification
in the near future, since the WNV circulation may become more evident
later in the summer months.

More specific and detailed information on the cases that occurred
during the last 2 years (2008-2009) in animals and humans has been
published recently:

I hope that these data may be useful to better clarify the situation
on WND in Lombardy and Emilia Romagna regions.

[Dr Cordioli's clarification of the current WNV situation in the
Lombardy and Emilia Romagna regions is much appreciated. It is good
to learn that there is no evidence of WNV circulation in that area
this early in the season this year (2010). One hopes that 2010 will
be a quiet year there for WNV.
