EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
Genotyping showed that the virus circulating in Italy is closely related to cluster 1.2, which includes strains isolated in Nigeria and South Africa. The only confirmed outbreak in mainland Italy (Lombardy region, Mantua province) was the consequence of the legal movement of animals from the first confirmed outbreak in Sardinia about three weeks before. Based on the clinical and entomological surveillance carried out in the restricted zones, the data support the absence of active viral circulation. To date, all the suspicions notified in mainland Italy, based on the back-tracing of movements from Sardinia or clinical signs, were negative. All the new outbreaks are in Sardinia, mainly located in Nuoro province. An intense clinical surveillance throughout region is ongoing. Vaccination of the entire cattle population in Sardinia should start shortly.
