An outbreak of avian flu in a small farm in San Giovanni in Persiceto that forced the slaughter of all the animals. In recent days, the owners of the farm have noticed the death of several hens and guinea fowl, 15 heads, and have alerted the Veterinary Services of the Ausl of Bologna. The presence of avian influenza was confirmed by the analyzes by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna, Forlì section and, as required by law, the remaining 13 animals were euthanized with euthanasia methods to contain the spread of the infection which effectively remained confined to the San Giovanni farm.
For greater safety, a protection zone has been established for farms within a radius of three kilometers and a surveillance zone for those within a radius of ten kilometers, where the Veterinary Services carry out clinical examinations and sampling on animals. The farms affected by the restriction measures are eleven, distributed between the municipalities of San Giovanni in Persiceto and Crevalcore. But, at the moment, no other outbreaks have been found. People in contact with animals were subjected to nasopharyngeal swabs to rule out contagion at the time of reporting and they were all negative. The analyzes were carried out by the laboratory of the Regional Reference Center for Microbiological Emergencies of Sant'Orsola.
From the epidemiological investigation carried out by veterinarians, it is assumed that the infection occurred as a result of contact of free-range poultry with wild birds. The presence of the virus among wild animals in other provinces of Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Veneto is known and carefully monitored. There are no risks for the local population who do not have contact with poultry and also with regard to food, the Ausl makes it known that there is no risk for consumers through the consumption of meat and eggs, if the normal hygiene rules useful for preventing possible food poisoning are followed: poultry meat and eggs must always be handled and stored separately from other foods and properly cooked.
