Published by editorial @ admin | 21 December 2017

A new positivity for influenza virus subtype H5 was confirmed by the National Reference Center for Avian Influenza (CRN) on December 15th: it is a multi-species industrial farm located in the province of Mantua. On 18 December, the virus was characterized by CNR as a low pathogenic influenza virus.

A new outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) sustained by a virus of the subtype H5 was confirmed by the CRN on 19 December. Positivity has been identified in a multi-species breeding with annexed slaughterhouse in the province of Padua.

The complete characterization of the viruses isolated in the last two LPAI outbreaks is still ongoing.

For more information on the Italian epidemiological situation for Avian Influenza with low pathogenicity, please refer to the site of the IZSVe, Center of Reference for the disease.

Bird flu: epidemiological situation in Italy - LPAI

20/12/2017 -

On December 15th, the National Reference Center for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease confirmed a new positivity for influenza virus subtype H5 in a multi-species industrial farm in the province of Mantua (Lombardy). The isolated virus does not belong to the subtype N8. The free-range breeding hosted 840 ducks, 573 geese and 5,800 pheasants from repopulation at the time of confirmation. Positivity was confirmed as a result of virological controls performed prior to the movement of the birds. On 18 December, the virus was found to be of low pathogenicity.

On December 19, the CRN confirmed another positivity for influenza virus H5 subtype of low pathogenicity in an industrial breeding with annexed slaughterhouse in the province of Padua (Veneto). At the time of confirmation, there were about 4,200 brooders in the farm, 4,250 pharaohs, 1,400 ducks, 2,300 laying hens, 2,800 capons and 10 geese. The samples were collected following an increase in mortality detected from the evening of 15 December. The complete characterization of the viruses isolated in the last two outbreaks is still ongoing.
