Ten people tested positive for monkeypox. It is a viral infection that manifests itself mainly through skin rashes with blisters, swollen lymph nodes and fever. The cases emerged starting in the second week of January. It was a family doctor in Mugello who was the first to sense and report a suspicious patient. Then the analyzes confirmed it. In a short time, prevention research was started to trace other possible infections. And about ten infections were discovered.

According to what has been reconstructed, seven of these people, who came from several provinces in the region, had been in a nightclub in the hinterland of Florence, frequented mainly by the homosexual community. From a clinical point of view, none of them are of concern. The Region has already sent a report to the Ministry of Health, as expected for this type of disease. We are now moving forward with reconstructing contacts that the positives may have had, however the situation does not raise concern and is under control.

Monkeypox in the Florentine area, situation under control

Health companies promptly took charge of the cases

There are eleven cases of monkeypox diagnosed in Tuscany, all promptly managed by health companies, explained by the offices of the department for the right to health. The public hygiene services have carried out epidemiological investigations to identify any contacts and have proceeded, in recent days, to notify the cases to the Ministry of Health. The infection dates back to the Christmas holidays.

All the measures identified in the ministerial circular have been implemented which provide for self-isolation and information on hygiene measures and the behaviors to be implemented, in order to prevent the spread of the disease to other people.

The Region, with the competent sectors, is in close contact with the local health authorities for constant monitoring of the situation, which appears to be stable and under control.

Monkeypox is a rare infectious viral disease, found mostly in tropical countries in Central and West Africa, although in 2022 there were outbreaks in several countries including Italy. It manifests itself with symptoms similar to that of smallpox, but in a less severe form. Transmission can occur through close physical contact, including sexual activity, with an infected person, their body fluids, or their skin lesions.

The disease appears a dozen days after exposure and lasts from two to four weeks: fever, headache, muscle pain, lymphadenopathy and skin rashes after the first few days are the symptoms. Monkeypox can present differently clinically: some people have mild symptoms, rarely asymptomatic, others can develop more serious symptoms.
