On 23 November 2016, the IZS delle Venezie seat of the National Reference Laboratory for Avian flu, confirmed positive for LPAI H5 flu virus on samples taken, as part of routine surveillance, in a kind farm breeding in the Province of Milan, Lombardy Region.

Under current legislation (Legislative Decree no. 9/2010) veterinary services have adopted the expected health measures, particularly the seizure, the establishment of a 1 km radius restriction zone and the slaughter and destruction of these birds.
