The task for the autopsy on the body of the little girl who died at the age of 4 from diphtheria in Palermo should be given in the next few days, with the examination which will then be carried out at the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the Polyclinic of the Sicilian capital. Meanwhile, Anna Rosa's parents, investigated by the Palermo prosecutor's office for manslaughter for not having vaccinated her, have filed a complaint against the three hospitals that treated the little girl from 13 to 19 August: Cervello, Civico and Children's Hospitals (which depends on the Civico) for 'the conduct carried out by healthcare personnel'. And they have appointed Professor Maurizio Municinò, a specialist in forensic medicine, hygiene and prevention, as their party consultant.
The parents' accusations

Based on the parents' story - says the lawyer - 'little Anna Rosa would have been diagnosed with incorrect pathologies by the doctors of the emergency room of the Cervello hospital, following which the little girl would have undergone inadequate medical care and invasive surgical interventions, which would have ended up worsening the child's already serious health conditions, causing the child's death'. The state police officers of the Porta Nuova police station, adds the lawyer, proceeded to seize the health documentation which is already being examined by the investigators. 'We are now awaiting the assignment of the task which will take place in the offices of the Prosecutor's Office, aimed at carrying out the unrepeatable technical investigations (autopsy) to be carried out on Anna Rosa's body, necessary to establish not only the causes of death but above all the possible responsibility of the doctors and medical staff involved in the affair', underlines the parents' lawyer.

The two cases of diphtheria recorded in Palermo, both found in minors from the same family unit, do not represent an epidemic cluster: this is what emerged during the first meeting of the regional task force on vaccinations which took place in the premises of the Department of Health in Piazza Ottavio Ziino, in Palermo.

'We are not facing an emergency - says councilor Marcello Caruso - but a wake-up call that requires us to further strengthen our commitment to increase vaccination coverage, which is still feeling the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Today's meeting of the body that I strongly wanted, and whose members I thank for the professionalism and commitment with which they are tackling this situation, was an important opportunity to define a shared strategy aimed at strengthening prevention and further promoting vaccinations'.

The starting point of the work was the circular that the Department of Health sent to all the Sicilian ASPs, to the trade union organizations of free-choice paediatricians and to the provincial orders of doctors to indicate some extraordinary measures for the vaccination recovery of the child population between 0 and 6 years of age. Furthermore, the task force shared the department's initiative to provide, starting from 1 September, access to the Single Regional Vaccination Registry (Avur) also to emergency room workers: this will allow emergency and emergency healthcare personnel to more easily verify the vaccination status of patients. Furthermore, systematic monitoring of vaccination coverage is also planned, again through Avur, with the aim of identifying territories and districts characterized by insufficient vaccination levels.

Based on the results, the Asp will be able to plan targeted interventions, in collaboration with paediatricians of free choice, general practitioners and hospital facilities that deal with infectious diseases. For the areas in which monitoring will highlight greater critical issues, specific initiatives will be activated, including the establishment of vaccination points within schools. Particular attention, it was underlined, will also be paid to birth centers: the proposal shared by the task force provides that, in all public and private facilities on the island, parents will be given the newborn's vaccination booklet, together with the indication of the reservation at the vaccination center where the prophylaxis can be carried out.

The proposals also include strengthening the diagnostic capacity of microbiology laboratories, to make diagnoses more effective with particular attention to unvaccinated children. Furthermore, the creation of a new regional vaccination promotion and communication campaign is planned, aimed in particular at parents and young couples through family counseling centers.

The communication will be structured for different population targets and will also use social media and the involvement of testimonials, with the collaboration of healthcare professional associations and journalists.
