The Metropolitan City of Milan Health Authority (ATS) is managing a suspected Legionella outbreak in the San Siro neighborhood of Milan, near Via Rembrandt. Eleven cases have been reported, all of which present predisposing risk factors for Legionella infection. One person has died, and eight are currently hospitalized.

Investigations have begun to identify the source of the infection through residential sampling, the laboratory results of which are still pending, and through the evaluation of other sensitive areas in the neighborhood.

Legionella is a bacterium that lives in aquatic environments, from which it can spread to the water supply of homes and other facilities. Transmission occurs exclusively through inhalation of tiny droplets (aerosols) of contaminated water. It cannot be spread from person to person or by drinking the water.

ATS continues its epidemiological surveillance activities and the completion of environmental investigations.
