Pandemic H1N1 2009 mortality trend

The Mortality surveillance system describes the epidemiology of influenza A/H1N1pdm deaths, the link with underlying health conditions and for possible changes in the epidemiological pattern.

  • during the last surveillance week (march 8-14) one additional fatal case has been reported. Cumulatively, there were 242 fatalities due to influenza A/H1N1pdm virus infection. Of these, 41,3% were women.
  • the most representative age-groups for fatal outcome are: those in their 15-55 years of age (33,5% of the total), and those in their 45-64 years of age (33,1%)
  • the Region accounting for the higher number of fatalities is Campania (21,5% of the total); other regions are: Apulia (Puglia, 15%), Piedmont (Piemonte) and Sicily (Sicilia) both with 10% of the total fatalities; Calabria and Lazio follow with 6%. Valle d'Aosta and Sardinia (Sardegna) haven't reported a single death.
  • among the fatal cases, 80,5% of the patients had at least one of the underlying health conditions considered as risk factor for a poor outcome.
