Dengue cases reported in several parts of Tuscany
Local authorities carry out targeted mosquito-control measures following cases linked to travel abroad.

Several cases of dengue have been reported in Tuscany in recent weeks among people who had recently travelled to Asia. Local health authorities are monitoring the situation and, where necessary, have introduced targeted mosquito-control measures in the areas where patients have stayed.

Dengue commonly causes fever and flu-like symptoms and generally resolves within about a week. Serious complications are relatively uncommon.

The latest case was reported in Orentano, in the province of Pisa. The patient, an Indian citizen who had recently returned from India, was already experiencing symptoms when he arrived in Italy. He is currently being treated at Cisanello Hospital in Pisa. Following the case, Orentano Mayor Fabio Mini ordered disinfestation in the areas where the patient had stayed. Pisa Mayor Michele Conti subsequently issued a further order for mosquito-control measures within a 200-metre radius of Cisanello Hospital.

Other cases have been reported in Tuscany since the end of August, with patients being monitored by the local health authorities responsible for their areas of residence...

Twenty-two cases of Dengue have been confirmed from August to today in Tuscany and the majority are on the way to recovery. No serious cases have been recorded.

The data confirms the reassurances provided by infectious disease specialists in recent days. Dengue manifests itself as a flu-like syndrome, complications are rare and the clinical picture usually resolves within a week. The most frequent symptoms are fever, muscle or retro-orbital pain, sometimes a skin rash may appear. There is no specific therapy: paracetamol is used against fever and pain.

However, the situation continues to be carefully monitored by the Region, in close coordination with the local health authorities. All cases concern people who frequented a limited area between Piombino and Baratti in August.

Dengue is not transmitted directly from person to person, but through the bite of infected mosquitoes (and in particular the tiger mosquito, present in Tuscany since 1990).

It is essential to adopt useful behaviors to therefore limit their proliferation, in public and private spaces, to avoid 'breeding' them in an unconscious manner. Disinfestation remains essential.
