Italy - Covid-19: 286,297 cases,?35,603 deaths

[h=1]Coronavirus, two quarantined military ships[/h]
The virus on the San Giusto and San Giorgio helicopter carriers, among the most important units in the Navy. That could have been used precisely for the health emergency
March 13, 2020
The virus struck another serious blow against the military. After infecting a dozen senior officers, including the Army commander-in-chief and causing the death of a colonel, he has now forced the crews of two military ships to quarantine. These are the San Giorgio and San Giusto, two of the most important units in our fleet, indicated among the possible tools in support of Civil Protection.

The alarm went off after two soldiers, probably from the naval rifle department, were positive: one is hospitalized in the Perrino hospital in Brindisi. Ten days ago they had participated in an exercise, living on board the two ships. For this reason, the Navy "immediately adopted restrictive measures to protect the health of staff, family members and citizens, by reporting the crews of the two ships to the health authorities for the purpose of quarantine". Now about three hundred men and women are in solitary confinement in their quarters or inside the barracks. San Giorgio and San Giusto remain completely empty, moored and monitored in the port of Brindisi. It has not been decided how long this situation will continue,

These are two helicopter carriers, practically miniature aircraft carriers, 135 meters long and with a displacement of over 7900 tons. Each has a crew of 17 officers and 146 between graduates and sail..:tiphat:https://www.repubblica.it/cronaca/2020/03/13/news/coronavirus_navi_militari-251218656/

Coronavirus death toll in Italy rises to 1,441

March 14, 2020
1:16 PM EDT

MILAN — The death toll in Italy’s coronavirus outbreak rose to 1,441 on Saturday, up almost 14% from the 1,266 total reported a day earlier, the civil protection authority said on Saturday.

The total number of cases rose to 21,157 from 17,660, the authority said. Italy remains the worst affected country in Europe and second only to China, where the highly infectious virus first emerged...

Coronavirus victims, in Italy

Coronavirus emergency data in Italy continues to grow. And to change. On Friday 13 March the president of the Higher Institute of Health, Silvio Brusaferro, provided an important update on the characteristics of the deceased and positive patients with Sars-cov-2 (the virus that causes Covid-19, the 'coronavirus disease': it is always good to remember that the virus, in itself, is not a disease, and that you can have it in your body without getting sick, but remaining contagious for others for a long time).

Compared to last March 5, when Brusaferro had provided the same picture, the situation in Italy became extremely more critical. Back then, the cases were 4,636, the recovered 414, the coronavirus-related deaths 148. On Friday 13 March, the total cases had reached 17,660, the dead 250, the recovered 1439 (although one must understand each other, when it comes to 'healed' : and it is good to read this piece; here is the map).

'The data on mortality are deepening with the medical records of the deceased,' said Brusaferro. Here they are. (Here, however, the detailed ISS report with the identikit of virus positive patients)

The age

'Patients who died with the coronavirus have an average of over 80 years, 80.3, the peak of mortality is in the range between 80 and 89 years. Lethality, ie the number of deaths among the sick, is higher among those over 80. The average age of the deceased is much higher than the other positive ones '. This figure is in line with that of ten days ago: on March 5, the average age of the deceased was 81 years (slightly higher) and most of the deaths - 42.2% - had been registered in the age group between 80 and 89 years (32.4% of the deaths were between 70 and 79; 8.4% were between 60 and 69; 2.8% between 50 and 59 and 14.1% over 90 years).

Warning: these data are very different from those on patients. There the average age is much, much lower. The data published on March 11, relating to 8342 cases, revealed that 424 cases, equal to 5% of the sick, were less than 30 years old. That coronavirus also affects children: 43 under 9 years of age, and 85 under 19 years of age. And that, as reported by the epidemiologist Lopalco here, almost 12% of those hospitalized in intensive care are under 50 years old. In short: even if the lethality rate increases hand in hand with age (0.1% between 40 and 49 years; 0.2% between 50 and 59; 2.5% between 60 and 69 years; 6 , 4% between 70 and 79 years, 13.2% for the over 80) the virus is seriously affecting even the youngest.

Sex

Women, said Brusaferro, are only 25.8% of the deceased. If you look at sick patients (not just the dead), 38% of the women are: in line with world statistics. One of the interpretations given is that men smoke more.

Previous pathologies

The majority of the victims, specified Brusaferro, had 'multiple chronic diseases'. Two victims were not carriers of pathologies. 'The most frequent categories have 2-3 or more pathologies, about 46-47% of the total deaths'. On March 5, the ISS had specified that the most frequent previous pathology was hypertension, followed by ischemic heart disease and diabetes mellitus.

Two deaths under 40

Brusaferro then spoke of two patients who died under the age of 40. ?One of them was 39 years old and had a condition of neoplastic pathology? - a tumor, that is - ?and he died in hospital, the other always 39 years old died at home and had some comorbid factors including diabetes, obesity and other types of ailments that characterized his life before becoming infected ?.

So what?

In many cases - as Cristina Marrone explained here - the virus intervened in organisms not strong enough to react adequately and was most likely a contributing cause of death. Epidemiological studies conducted so far explained that the risk of death increases with age (for those over 80 reach 14.8%) and due to pre-existing medical conditions, according to variable risk percentages (+ 10.5% for cardiac patients; + 7.3% for diabetics; + 6.3% for those suffering from chronic respiratory diseases; + 6% for those with hypertension; up to + 5.5% for those with cancer). The president of the Higher Institute of Health, Silvio Brusaferro, explained days ago that these data 'confirm the observations made so far in the rest of the world, in particular on the fact that the elderly and people with pre-existing diseases are more at risk. Very fragile people, who often live in close contact and who we must protect as much as possible ?.

Coronavirus: the victims are 1,809, in a single day 368
Gallera: "Difficult situation in Lombardy". We need masks. Consip: '3,800 lung ventilators ordered'
ANSA editorial staff 15 March 202018: 43

1,809 coronavirus victims reached Italy. In one day there was an increase of 368 deaths. The increase had been 175 on Saturday. 2,335 people were healed in Italy after contracting the virus, 369 more than yesterday. More than 20,000 patients have been exceeded: a total of 20,603, an increase of 2,853 compared to Saturday, while the total number of infected people - including victims and the recovered - reached 27,747. The data was provided by the emergency commissioner Angelo Borrelli at a press conference to the Civil Protection.

"I am happy that Guido Bertolaso can help the Lombardy region and that he can be part of this game," says Commissioner Angelo Borrelli, replying to reporters who asked him what his relationship will be with the former head of civil protection called by Fontana as consultant. "I am a person who was brought up by Bertolaso and I think I have learned a lot from him - he added - my relationship with him is excellent and I will be happy to work with him".

The situation in Lombardy - "The positive are 13,272, plus 1,587, the hospitalized are 4,898, plus 602 compared to yesterday, there is a constant but not exponential growth. In intensive care, they only increase by 25, 757 in total, a a much smaller figure than the average of 45 but we don't sing victory, also because the deaths are 1,218, with a growth of 252 ": said the councilor for Welfare of the Lombardy Region Giulio Gallera.

While the government is working on new measures to support the economy and workers for the coronavirus emergency, the situation in Lombardy is becoming more complicated every day.

"We intubate in Intensive Care even more than 7 people a day and we work tirelessly, with an average of one shift every 14 days", tells ANSA Ivano Riva, anesthesiologist and resuscitator of the Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo. "If the trend of the SarsCov2 epidemic continues at this rate, Bergamo will still hold up very little," he admits.

"Minister Boccia recalled that 500 thousand masks have been sent to Lombardy, we thank him but we need 300 thousand a day," said the Lombardy Region Councilor for Welfare Giulio Gallera, adding that if "a delivery of 500 thousand masks is considered important, perhaps there is no perception of the battle we are experiencing here ".

"There is maximum attention for the situation in Lombardy", points out the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. "I see thousands of people working at risk and without stopping, from hospitals to those who guarantee services, from Regions, to Mayors, to Government, to Civil Protection. And I ask: enough controversy, enough mutual attacks. We are all on the same boat and there is no time to waste, "says the head of the delegation of the Democratic Party Dario Franceschini.

At least ten priests have died in Italy after contracting COVID-19. More than half of them were from the Diocese of Bergamo, a town outside of Milan in Lombardy.

The bishop of Bergamo, the Italian diocese hardest hit by the coronavirus outbreak, said Monday that the 20 priests in his diocese who have been hospitalized after contracting coronavirus have shown considerable improvement and six others have died.

“The number of priests who have died this week and that of those who are still in a particularly serious situation is very high,” Bishop Francesco Beschi of Bergamo said in an Italian radio interview March 16.

“We are living this pain by sharing it with that of our communities together with the number of infected people, the sick and a high number of deaths. We are not separated from our community even in the passage of death,” Breschi told InBlu...:tiphat:https://catholicherald.co.uk/in-ital...is-recovering/

The dramatic situation, confirmed by hospital sources, has been recorded in these hours. For the patients who will need ventilation and oxygen, the Italian intensive care network will be used. The first family doctor infected by Covid-19 died in Bergamo. Mario Giovita, 65, had been hospitalized in the Papa Giovanni XXIII hospital in recent days. His health conditions, according to what has been learned, have deteriorated rapidly and the death occurred from the complications of the Coronavirus.
