Coronavirus, the appeal of the Regions: "Continue to donate blood"

"It is essential to continue donating blood, if of course you are healthy: in fact in the last few days there has been a drop in donations. But blood is always needed ". The appeal was launched in recent days by the Liguria Region, in the aftermath of the discovery of the first case of coronavirus infection in the region, through the official account on Twitter . This is not an isolated appeal, the same invitation was also addressed to donors from the Lazio, Tuscany Regions. Puglia and Umbria.

The National Blood Center recalls that anyone who has stayed in the People's Republic of China or who has passed through and stopped since February 1, 2020 in the 10 Lombard municipalities and in the Veneto municipality (Lombardy: Bertonico, Casalpusterlengo, Castelgerundo, Castiglione D'Adda, Codogno, Fombio , Maleo, San Fiorano, Somaglia, Terranova dei Passerini Veneto: Vo ') affected by urgent measures to contain the infection will be suspended from donation for 28 days. The same measure will be adopted for anyone who has been in contact with people with an infection documented by Sars-CoV-2 . Also remember that those who are not affected by these measures can go to donate safely following the same precautionary guidelines established for the general population.

"To date, the risk of transfusion transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is not documented, and the measures are only precautionary, in accordance with what indicated by the European authorities - recalls Giancarlo Maria Liumbruno , general manager of the Cns -. attention is paid to the new coronavirus, but let's not forget that every day there are over 1,800 patients who need transfusion therapies. For donors, the precautions to be taken are those valid for everyone against coronavirus, always remembering that the fundamental requirement to donate is to be in good health, a cold is enough to be excluded ".

The first cases in Italy

The first two cases of Coronavirus in Italy, a couple of Chinese tourists, were confirmed on January 30 by the Spallanzani Institute , where they were hospitalized in isolation from January 29. On February 26, they were declared healed.

The Italian government declared the state of emergency on 31 January, earmarked the first funds and appointed Chief of Civil Protection Angelo Borrelli as Special Commissioner for the emergency.

The Council of Ministers passed a decree-law on 23 February 2020 with measures to prohibit access and removal in the municipalities where outbreaks are present and the suspension of demonstrations and events.

Based on the Prime Minister's Decree of 23 February 2020 and regional ordinances, the Municipalities interested in urgent measures to contain and manage the infection are:
  • in the Lombardy Region : Bertonico (Lo); Casalpusterlengo (Lo); Castelgerundo (Lo); Castiglione D'Adda (Lo); Codogno (Lo); Fombio (Lo); Maleo (Lo); San Fiorano (Lo); Somaglia (Lo); Terranova dei Passerini (Lo).
