Avian influenza alert: outbreaks discovered in Quinto and Villorba
By Alvise Salice -
November 10, 2024
The province of Treviso is on alert for the discovery of two outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) of the H5N1 type. The cases were identified in two domestic turkey farms, one located in Santa Cristina di Quinto and the other in Villorba.
In Villorba, the virus was initially detected following the discovery of the carcass of a sick duck in an unregistered family farm. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus, probably transmitted through contact with wild birds. To contain the infection, it was necessary to proceed with the slaughter of all the animals present in the facility.
The Veterinary Service of Ulss 2 immediately activated a strict safety protocol, placing 173 companies within a 10-kilometer radius of the outbreaks under surveillance: 18 of these are within 3 kilometers and 155 in the wider radius.
Until December 1, all the facilities involved will have to comply with strict safety measures, including:
Ban on participation in fairs, exhibitions and markets
Obligation to keep poultry and birds in sheltered facilities
Authorization to send to the slaughterhouse only after a clinical visit, checks and specific sampling
These preventive measures aim to contain the spread of the virus and protect both commercial and domestic farms in the area.
