An outbreak of avian influenza was identified and quickly contained in a small family farm in the territory of San Giuliano Terme, in the Pisa area. This was announced by the ASL Toscana Nord Ovest, which reassures on the full management of the situation.

The positivity emerged after the death of some chickens and hens: the samples analyzed by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Lazio and Tuscany confirmed the presence of the virus. The required biosecurity procedures were immediately triggered, to protect public health.

The slaughter of the animals on the farm was ordered and the control of all poultry facilities within a radius of three kilometers was started. Further sample checks are underway within an area of ten kilometers. At the moment there are no other cases of contagion.

As a precautionary measure, and considering that the risk of transmission to humans is extremely low, the members of the family unit involved are also under surveillance. The ASL also specifies that neither eggs nor poultry meat came out of the farm.

"The situation is under control and there are no reasons for concern for public health," said Mayor Matteo Cecchelli, stressing that monitoring will continue in the coming days in collaboration with health services.
