[It is interestingly, by the competent authorities there is always an attempt to get their hands on, to anticipate any reactions from the public before an alleged slowness of authorities to take all actions necessary to safeguard the public health, in the light of the discovery - not recently - an extended network of companies that have made offences related to food adulteration of dairy products of mass consumption. -- IOH]

Press release - September 5, 2008 - Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Policies - PRESS OFFICE

ABOUT THE CASE OF THE RELEASE ON MARKET OF TAINTED CHEESE:
STATEMENT OF STATE UNDERSECRETARY FRANCESCA MARTINI [original Italian language texts at: http://www.ministerosalute.it/imgs/C_17_comunicati_1783_testo.rtf]

With regard to news published today on some newspapers, concerning the marketing of cheese unsanitary, Undersecretary of State, Hon. Francesca Martini, announced that it intervened on this issue since July 4
Undersecretary also to verify if consumers had over the health risks from such practices target of the investigation by the Prosecutor of the Republic of Cremona, has requested, through the competent Directorate General of Security of food and nutrition, information to the above-mentioned prosecutor in order to proceed to any withdrawal from the market of products and to fulfil Community activation of rapid alert system as well as providing for Reg. U.E. 178/2001.

In this regard, August 4, the prosecutor announced that it could not be in a position to provide what is required because the stage of preliminary investigation had not yet completed and therefore any information to the investigation was subject to the obligation of confidentiality of investigations.

However, there is reason to believe that if the same prosecutor had identified a risk to public health, would promptly activated procedures of the system of alert, through the offices of the Ministry of Labour, Health and social policies, as a point of contact Community.

The same Undersecretary of State Hon Francesca Martini recalls that it has already ordered an intervention by the NAS [health and food state investigation unit - IOH] since July on all companies that intrattenevano business relations with those under investigation by the prosecutor of Cremona and had asked similar checks internationally.

Have been arranged joint inspections between the Ministry and the Regions at the establishments of the dairy, which include, inter alia, verification procedures and services, responsible for official must prepare.

At the Community level, Undersecretary urged regulatory intervention on the sector into account the extent of the problem that has affected other countries Community.

It 'obvious - stresses Undersecretary Hon Francesca Martini - that these fraudulent practices even though they have not endangered the health of citizens, however, create alarm as well as attitudes of distrust among consumers, damaging businesses that operate on the market correctly and undermine the good name of our country in terms of quality and food safety.

Finally he was called into question, in an article published in the newspaper La Repubblica, the commander of [Police] Station in Cremona without specifying, of course facts attributed to him but where are expressed only free allegations that generate suspicion and shadows on those who work for the protection and for the common good.

Statements are so generic to express views generate discredit the weapon on an officer of the ''carabinieri'' and are not good for the right to chronicle and information nor concern the truth legal and procedural.

[The health authorities would do well to implement measures investigation on the ground, without feeling embarassed compared to the chronicle of journalists, which is essential for citizens who find themselves alone in front of the giants of large retailers and products which are often difficult -- If not impossible - traceability. If the whole chain of production of food intended for mass consumption there is a criminal network is good that this is pursued through the judiciary - which is indeed happening - but also the competent national health authorities, regional and local authorities have for their part prevent citizens consume potentially harmful foods without waiting for the results of judicial investigations that may require even months to a close. In the meantime we can not run the risk that adulterated products still reach the shelves of supermarkets or even end up abroad or as by-products / semis further fraud. IOH]

Re: Italy: About The Case Of The Release On Market Of Tainted Cheese, Ministry Of Health, Statement

It's not clear if listeria or other pathogens are involved in this case of food adulteration.

Food and drugs state's police investigative unit discovered a net of companies that purchased raw material from a criminal syndacate, who collected from other firms decay cheese, covered by rats faeces, decomposed rats corpses and more other.

After examination of raw material movement, police traced a net of companies that manufactured cheese after filtration and treatment of these materials, food destined to supermarkets and large distribution outlets.

It is also not clear whether this food is continuing to be distributed and the total amout potentially tainted since the companies involved are among the bigger in Italy.
