Italy - A man infected from Chikungunya virus

tetano

Editor, Senior Moderator
First case of Chikungunya, a viral disease characterized by fever and severe pain that is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. A man of Italian nationality over 65 years of age residing in Pievetta, a hamlet of Castel San Giovanni, was hit.
In recent days, the man had shown some symptoms of this virus: fever, muscle and joint pain and conjunctivitis. He has not recently traveled to risk areas: for this reason it is assumed that the local transmission of the virus took place locally. The patient is not hospitalized but is kept in isolation in his home. The diagnosis was made possible thanks to the report of the family doctor and laboratory confirmation on a blood sample, which arrived on Sunday 13 July.
"It is an exotic virus that we now have among us," explains Dr. Marco Maserati, head of the veterinary service of the Ausl of Piacenza. Chikungunya was talked about in 2007 in Romagna, then nothing, until today, when the first case of the Piacenza area was found, in Pievetta di Castel San Giovanni. "The suspicion is that local mosquitoes are therefore circulating in the population," observes Maserati, "and the only fight we can put in place is that of disinfestation. Citizens must be made aware as much as possible of the behaviour to be adopted".

Virus Chikungunya in Rovigo

A new health alarm shakes Rovigo, this time linked to public health. The ULSS 5 Polesana company has reported to the Municipality the occurrence of a human case of infection with the Chikungunya virus, transmitted by the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), after the case of West Nile in Lendinara. The case concerns a citizen residing in Emilia Romagna, who assiduously frequented the areas surrounding the 'Francesco Venezze' Conservatory of Music in the heart of the city.

Chikungunya, two autochthonous cases in Veneto

NEGRAR DI VALPOLICELLA (VERONA) - The number of cases of chikungunya in Veneto has risen to two: the first was diagnosed by the Department of Infectious, Tropical Diseases and Microbiology of the IRCCS of Negrar, on a 64-year-old woman with no history of recent travel to countries where the disease has reached an endemic state, as reported by the Region's Prevention Directorate. The woman is now hospitalized, alert, and actively collaborates with doctors. The second case was diagnosed in a 39-year-old woman from Affi. She too has no history of recent travel to countries where the disease is endemic. The woman is not hospitalized and currently has mild symptoms.

Chikungunya, the number of confirmed cases rises to six in Modena area. Suspicions about others, the search for 'patient zero'

Chikungunya: the number of diagnosed cases is increasing and at least three are linked to each other (so we can speak of an outbreak). As the Modena Ausl reports, as of yesterday there were six people affected. After the first three cases in Carpi (a 48-year-old woman and her parents, aged 82 and 79) communicated in recent days, three new cases of Chikungunya were ascertained yesterday in the province of Modena. They are two women aged 34 and 78 in Carpi, and a 19-year-old girl in Concordia. The Ausl also reports that all the new cases are in good health and their hospitalization was not necessary. From the epidemiological investigation conducted to date, still in progress, even the new cases have not returned from trips abroad. Investigations continue to verify the possible link with previous cases and the search for patient "zero". Following the new report, as always happens for cases of Chikungunya, but also Dengue and Zika, the Public Hygiene service immediately contacted the municipalities of residence (Carpi and Concordia), which have already started extraordinary disinfestation interventions, both adulticides and larvicides, as required by the Regional Plan for the Surveillance and Control of Arbovirosis.

Further extraordinary disinfestations continue in Carpi for suspected cases of Chikungunya. As stated by the Municipality, following the confirmation by the Modena Local Health Authority of the cases relating to the area of via Wiligelmo, the extraordinary disinfestation continued last night, today during the day and at night. The closure of the Pertini Park and also of the 2012 Earthquake Park remains and is extended until 10 a.m. on Sunday.

In addition, further suspected cases were reported by the Ausl in three other areas of the city (and one in San Prospero), where the extraordinary disinfestation treatment started, yesterday from 11 pm with adulticide products and today, at 7 am with larvicide products. The areas affected are those around via Aldo Moro, via Lago Trasimeno and via Salvo d"Acquisto in the hamlet of Santa Croce.

Chikungunya outbreak, cases rise to 9

An extraordinary wide-ranging disinfestation intervention was launched yesterday evening in the municipality of Carpi for the containment of the tiger mosquito, vector of the Chikungunya virus. The decision was taken following the multiplication of cases in the province: three new ones diagnosed yesterday, of which two are in Carpi (a 61-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman) and a 63-year-old woman in San Prospero. All three are in good health: none is hospitalized. The cases thus rise to nine, after those communicated in recent days, of which at least three are linked to each other (therefore we can speak of an outbreak).

A new case of chikungunya in Verona

In Verona a new case of Chikungunya, diagnosed by the Department of Infectious-Tropical Diseases and Microbiology Sacred Heart Don Calabria in Negrar. Mayor Damiano Tommasi has issued an ordinance to facilitate the disinfestation activities scheduled for 16, 17 and 18 August with the start of operations at 8.30 pm until 11.30 pm. About thirty streets are involved. It is mandatory for individuals, residents and businesses to allow, if requested, access to the specialized operators of the company in charge, Triveneta Multiservizi.

Third autochthonous case of chikungunya recorded in Veneto

A third autochthonous case of chikungunya virus was found in Veneto, in a 69-year-old man residing in the municipality of Verona.

the confirmation - informs the Region - came from the Microbiology and Virology department of the University Hospital of Padua, a regional and EU reference laboratory on viral pathogens transmitted by vectors.
The man, with symptoms that arose on August 8 (fever, skin rash, joint pain), had been reported by the Verona emergency room.

Some laboratory investigations are underway to verify whether there is a link with the two previous cases.
Thanks to the epidemiological investigation launched by the Hygiene and Public Health Service of the ULSS 9 company, it was possible to quickly identify the places of possible exposure to the infected mosquito, identified in an area on the border between the municipalities of Negrar di Valpolicella (Verona) and Verona, already subjected to extraordinary disinfestation in the days immediately following the report. Pest control interventions are being completed in the area of residence of the latter case.
As part of the epidemiological investigation of possible suspected cases, serological tests were also performed for the search for specific antibodies against the virus, useful for reconstructing the possible presence of infections in the affected area in subjects who had symptoms compatible with the disease.

In the province of Modena there are 41 cases of Chikungunya

There are 41 confirmed cases of Chikungunya in the province of Modena.

These are 16 men and 25 women, between 14 and 98 years old.

No one is in serious health conditions: the Ausl reports it. The municipality mainly involved is Carpi (36 cases to date) to which are added the municipalities of Modena, San Prospero, Concordia sulla Secchia and Soliera (hamlet of Limidi).
The cases of Modena and Soliera are to be considered no longer at risk of transmission of the virus to mosquitoes. In particular, the cases that emerged in Carpi are also linked to active research, thanks to the sampling activity and awareness of citizens and health personnel. From the epidemiological investigation conducted to date, still in progress, the infected have not returned from trips abroad, except for the case residing in Modena. The municipalities involved (both of residence and work of the cases) have already started or intensified extraordinary disinfestation interventions, both adulticides and larvicides, as required by the Regional Plan for the surveillance and control of arboviruses 2025.

Chikungunya in the Verona area, the number of cases in the Verona area rises to 10

In recent days, additional autochthonous cases of chikungunya have been notified in the Verona area, bringing the total number of people infected with the virus to 10 (of which 7 confirmed and 3 classified as probable) since the beginning of the outbreak. All cases are currently at home and in good health.

This was announced in its latest report by the Prevention Directorate of the Veneto Region.

"All the latest cases - specify the regional technicians - are residents in the Municipality of Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella (without epidemiological correlation with the Parona area), far from the first areas affected and treated with extraordinary disinfestation interventions. On the basis of what has emerged so far from the investigations, the Prevention Directorate, having heard colleagues from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, the IZSVe and the ULSS 9 Scaligera, intends to strengthen the regional strategy with the aim of reducing the spread of the infection".

Chikungunya, outbreak in Modena: 104 cases ascertained in the province so far

There are 104 confirmed cases of Chikungunya in the province of Modena: 49 men and 55 women, between nine and 98 years old. No person involved is in serious health conditions. The most 'affected' municipality is Carpi (95 cases to date), followed by Modena, San Prospero, Concordia sulla Secchia and Soliera (hamlet of Limidi). Of the 104 cases, most (84, 80%) are represented by people who are no longer viremic, and therefore by individuals who, if bitten by the mosquito, are no longer able to transmit the virus to the mosquitoes themselves and therefore to other people.

Cases rise to 50 in Verona

No turning point. Chikungunya goes straight on its way and does not back down. After a break of four consecutive days without new positives, there was hope for a reversal of the virus's race, but on Wednesday the bad news arrived once again: four new cases reappeared en bloc, which moved the bar straight to 50 infected, of which 4 are still "probable" and attributable to the Sant'Ambrogio outbreak. These latest infections are a 16-year-old girl, a resident of San Giovanni Lupatoto (Verona) but who was bitten by the mosquito vector of the virus in San Pietro in Cariano. Then there is a 32-year-old man, a resident of Cadidavid-Borgo Roma and for whom it is not possible to trace the place of infection, and a 60-year-old woman from Buttapietra but aims for Parona. For the fourth case, it is a probable positive and therefore we must wait for confirmation tests.
