Bird flu
National and international epidemiological data
In the period between summer and autumn 2022 there was an extension of the epidemic that began in autumn 2021 with the involvement of colonies of wild marine birds belonging to the order suliformes as well as various species of aquatic birds.
New cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza were confirmed throughout Europe also in the period from December 2022 to March 2023 for a total of 522 cases in domestic animals and 1138 cases in wild animals. In the latter period, the epidemic of highly pathogenic avian influenza which struck the black-headed gull in particular in north-eastern Italy, Belgium, France and the Netherlands has taken on particular importance. The virus involved in these epidemic phenomena is the subtype H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b. and the viral genetic analyzes carried out in Italy on wild birds show that this virus is also circulating in our sedentary species.
Due to the high viral circulation in the wild from September 2022 to April 2023, forty outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in domestic animals were confirmed in Italy, which partly involved small rural farms.
The H5N1 virus responsible for the current cases in wild and domestic birds has also been shown to infect mammals.
Serious mortality events occurred in sea lion colonies in Peru in January February 2022 and an outbreak was confirmed in a mink farm in Spain in October 2022. In Italy, in April 2023, two outbreaks were confirmed cases in foxes most likely caused by the ingestion of birds that died from avian influenza.
