THE GANESH Shanker Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College faculty members confirmed that the fever that gripped the city was chikungunya.
At a seminar on chikungunya held on the GSVM campus here on Thursday, the experts said that the chikungunya fever caused joints pain but it was not fatal.

The doctors also advised the people not to panic and consult a doctor immediately. The medical college administration held the seminar on the disease under the banner of Clinical Society following denial by several Health department officials and a few doctors.

Besides, the aim of the seminar was also to dispel doubts about the fever.
Speaking on the occasion, Clinical Society president and spokesperson of Medicine Department of the medical college Dr Rakesh Chandra said, ?chikungunya spreads due to biting of Adeez mosquito. It was first spotted in Africa.?

?The word chikungunya has originated from Kungunayal which means one that bents. The disease spreads due to Alpha virus,? he added. While it was first spotted in Tanzania in 1952, in India it was detected in Kolkata in 1963.

According to Dr Chandra, as the mosquitoes responsible for the disease generally became active during dawn and dusk, it was necessary to be more cautious.

Dr Chandra claimed that both dengue and chikungunya spread due to same species of mosquito. However, the symptoms found in the patients visiting hospital were that of chikungunya and not of dengue.

Dr Chandra advised the patients suffering from this fever not to take aspirin or any painkiller at any cost as it caused more complications.

Keeping the pathological aspect of the disease in mind, Dr GC Upadhyaya of microbiology department gave details of the technical aspect of the alpha virus. He said chikungunya was tested only at National Institute of Communicable Disease, New Delhi and SGPGI.

However, on the basis of symptoms a patient could be treated for chikungunya.
