AS the swine flu spreads across the country, information technology ( IT) companies are asking their employees to work from home and maintain all sorts of precautions during their stay in office.
Employees at IT campuses located in Pune and Bangalore have been told to avoid large meetings and cafeteria food.Realising the gravity of the situation, industry body Nasscom has postponed an important upcoming event - the global engineering summit scheduled to be held on August 18- 19 at Pune.
The body issued a statement saying, " Pune has a vibrant ITBPO sector and NASSCOM is in regular touch with its members who are taking all precautionary measures and monitoring the situation very closely.
Companies are continuously focused on educating their employees with the dos & don'ts and are taking additional care on health- related issues." Large IT companies such as TCS are using their company portals to spread awareness about the flu. According to a TCS spokesperson, " The company's internal portal is being used to build awareness among employees about the swine flu. FAQs on the flu and constant updates are being given to the employees on preventive measures and selfassessment of persons potentially affected by the virus, among others".
Infosys has also issued an advisory to its employees asking them to avoid travelling to Pune unless unavoidable.
Security firm Symantec has been issuing advisories regularly, telling employees with symptoms of common cold and fever to work from home.
The company has also asked its employees to avoid large meetings and bring lunchboxes from home. All door handles in the premises are being frequently sanitised.
Wipro too, has told its employees to avoid travel as much possible. Accenture has made in- house arrangements for a human resource ( HR) representative to guide the staff.
In a statement, Mahindra Satyam said, " One of the preventive measures we have undertaken is to request the associates who are returning from onsite ( outside India) to offsite locations to undergo a check- up for detection of Influenza H1N1.
They have been advised to work from home for at least a week after their return from travel." However, IBM said it had been preparing for a potential influenza pandemic since 2005 and is now closely monitoring the current situation.
However, all IT firms claim there has been no loss of business due to the swine flu.
