In the past 24 hours the Health Ministry counted three more cases of deaths from the H1N1 virus, known as swine flu, despite the fact that there is no proof the new virus is what caused the deaths.


A 22-year-old man died at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem Thursday morning. The man suffered from other serious illnesses and arrived at the hospital with severe pneumonia and a high fever and was immediately admitted to the intensive care ward.


He was treated with the Tamiflu drug against swine flu before arriving at the hospital.


Two other patients died over night at the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa: A man 66-year-old man who was admitted with serious illnesses as well as swine flu, and a 60-year-old female tourist with cancer. The woman was also diagnosed with the H1N1 flu.


According to Health Ministry data, so far 2,670 people have been diagnosed with swine flu in Israel, with many more believed to have contracted the virus and healed on their own.


Of the 2,670, only 22 were admitted to intensive care units, and 14 died.



The Health Ministry stressed that most of the fatalities from the flu, as well as most of the patients that needed to be hospitalized, were people suffering from severe chronic diseases unrelated to H1N1.


The Health Ministry said the youth that died Thursday morning also suffered from serious illnesses and that while it can not be determined for certain, swine flu can not be ruled out as a possible cause of death.


Therefore, the ministry decided to count the case as a swine flu-related death.

A 52-year-old man who suffered from chronic illness and also was infected with H1N1 flu virus died on Wednesday at Haifa's Bnai Zion Medical Center.

The Health Ministry said the connection between the virus and his death could not be proven, but the man was listed nevertheless as the 28th victim since the unusual strain first appeared here in the early spring.

31st Israeli H1N1 victim: 50-year-old dies in Afula hospital

A 50-year-old man who suffered from serious chronic illness and was infected a month ago with H1N1 flu virus died on Wednesday at the Emek Medical Center in Afula.

The Health Ministry said that while a link between the virus and his death could not be proven, he was listed as the 31st Israeli victim of this strain of flu since early spring.

So far, 3,030 Israelis have been diagnosed with H1N1 flu virus; of these, 67 were treated in hospital intensive care units.

Six of them are now in ICUs.

JERUSALEM, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Israel on Tuesday announced its latest fatal case related to the A/H1N1 virus, bringing the total number of death toll claimed by the global pandemic in the country to 32.

The new victim, who died on Sunday in Jerusalem's Sha'are Tzedek Hospital, was a 69-year-old man who also suffered from other chronic illnesses, local daily The Jerusalem Post quoted Israeli Health Ministry as saying.

However, the ministry said that the H1N1 virus could not be ruled out as the cause of his death, and was therefore counting the man as Israel's 32nd A/H1N1 fatality.

Some 3,000 A/H1N1 cases have so far been confirmed across the nation with a population of about 7 million, and most of them have recovered.

Local health experts have warned that about one quarter of the total Israeli population would contract the virus during a possible outbreak this winter, among whom around 700 would die.

The Israeli government has been taking precaution measures, including purchasing 65.6 million U.S. dollars worth of vaccines.

In two weeks, Israeli Health Ministry expects to purchase and import 350,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine, out of a total of 2.3 million doses to be available here by the end of March, according to The Jerusalem Post.

The first 430,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine will be offered here to high-risk populations, starting with medical staffers, pregnant women, people with chronic illness and weak immune systems, and children, added the newspaper.
