Child in Safed diagnosed with polio, Health Ministry says

The Health Ministry announces that a case of polio has been diagnosed in an unvaccinated child in Safed.

The child was brought into a local hospital with weakness in his limbs and was tested, leading to the diagnosis.

Health officials are now looking into the child’s contacts to identify any others who may have been affected.

Three more children diagnosed with polio virus in northern outbreak

New asymptomatic cases discovered among close contacts of initial patient in city of Safed; Health Ministry warns of potential spread

Three more children have been diagnosed with polio after an 8-year-old in the northern city of Safed tested positive for the virus on Monday.

A Health Ministry statement on Thursday said that the three children had been in contact with the infected child, who was unvaccinated, and tested positive for the polio virus despite not having any symptoms.

The ministry did not reveal the vaccination status of the three children who tested positive Thursday.

“In recent months, there is evidence of a spread of polio in many sewage systems in Israel, which has more than 150,000 children unvaccinated against the virus,” the statement warned.

March 2023. Polio cases in Israel, pending classification. cVDPV3?

On February 27, 2023, the Israeli Ministry of Health issued an alert describing a case of acute flaccid paralysis disease. The case is an unvaccinated eight-year-old boy from the Safed area . The boy arrived at the hospital with limb weakness and a sample tested positive for polio virus with further laboratory investigations underway.


According to the Israeli authorities, there is evidence of the continued existence of polio in the wastewater of many localities. The type of poliovirus is unknown as of now. Epidemiological investigations are still ongoing.


On March 2, 2023, the Israeli Ministry of Health reported 3 additional cases in three children who tested positive for the polio virus. All three children were asymptomatic with unknown vaccination status. They were close contacts of those previously described a case of acute-onset flaccid paralysis and identified through an epidemiological investigation.


In March 2022, a case due to cVDPV3 was confirmed in an unvaccinated girl in the city of Jerusalem. In addition to the cVDPV3 Case, sewage samples collected between January and June 2022 from the Jerusalem district were found to be positive for cVDPV2.


In Israel, the last cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) occurred in 1988, during an outbreak in the Hadera district resulting in 15 cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP).
