Ten-and-a-Half-Year-Old Girl Dies from Flu

A healthy girl from central Israel, up-to-date on vaccinations, was hospitalized in critical condition with fever and sore throat and died. This is the ministry’s first flu-related death this year.

A ten-and-a-half-year-old girl from central Israel has died from influenza. She was generally healthy and up to date on routine vaccinations but had not received a flu shot. Her parents reported fever and sore throat before she was hospitalized in critical condition.

The Ministry of Health warns that flu transmission has reached epidemic levels, with each infected person spreading the virus to more than one individual.

Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged six months and older, especially those 65+, people with chronic conditions (diabetes, heart, lung, kidney disease, or cancer), and children under five.

Although the vaccine doesn’t fully prevent infection, it greatly reduces severity, lowers the risk of complications, and prevents serious outcomes. The vaccine is free at HMOs.

Vaccinating children and young people also offers some protection to adults around them.

About 1.1 million HMO members have been vaccinated so far—half aged 65 and older, around 11% of all members. Yet 60% of those 65+, 85% of the chronically ill, and 77% of pregnant women remain unvaccinated. Early data indicate this season may be more severe than previous years.

Last year, at least 422 hospitalized flu patients died in Israel, including four children under 18, four adults under 35, and 17 under 50. Data from 13 general hospitals covering 60% of hospitalizations suggest the actual number is higher.

Vaccinated 6-year-old boy dies of flu

A six-year-old boy has died from the flu, the Health Ministry reports.

The boy, who had no underlying health conditions and was vaccinated against the flu, began suffering from fever and a severe cough several days ago. His condition then deteriorated, and he died despite resuscitation efforts, the ministry says.

The ministry says that this year’s flu season began early in Israel and other countries. From monitoring worldwide data, it is expected to be a season with severe morbidity.

The ministry emphasizes that although the flu vaccine does not completely prevent infection with the disease, it helps alleviate its severity and significantly reduces the risk of serious illness or death. The vaccine is available and provided free of charge at all healthcare providers.

Last week an otherwise healthy 10-year-old girl who was not vaccinated against the flu died of the disease.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, following unsuccessful resuscitation efforts.

The boy, who had no underlying health conditions and was not vaccinated against the flu, began showing respiratory symptoms yesterday, reports say.

His death is the third flu-related fatality of the season, after a vaccinated six-year-old died on Wednesday, and a 10-year-old girl, who had not yet been vaccinated this season, died last week.

Advisory Committee on Epidemic Control Urges Everyone to Get Flu Vaccine, Sick Individuals Advised to Stay Home

Data from the meeting show that this year’s Influenza season in Israel and elsewhere started early and is already severe, with severe illness among children. Global trends suggest a particularly serious season ahead.

The Advisory Committee on Epidemic Control recommends that everyone get vaccinated against the flu.

While the vaccine does not completely prevent infection, it greatly reduces disease severity and the risk of serious illness or death.

Anyone with flu symptoms should stay home until fully recovered and avoid exposing others, including keeping sick children out of school and daycare.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that the vaccine is safe, recommended for everyone six months and older, and provides the most effective protection.

The flu vaccine is available free at health maintenance organizations (HMOs).

Ministry experts will continue exploring ways to increase vaccination rates and address other issues raised during the expert meeting.

Four of the five children who died of influenza complications were not vaccinated for flu.

The Ministry recommends that the entire population get vaccinated as soon as possible, and emphasizes that although the flu vaccine does not completely prevent illness, it reduces the severity in most cases. The vaccine is available free of charge at all HMOs.

As a precautionary measure, the Ministry of Health recommends that at-risk populations consider wearing masks in closed spaces and at gatherings. The Ministry also advises mask-wearing for medical staff and visitors in nursing homes and geriatric institutions

Return to wearing masks?
As a precaution, the Health Ministry recommends that at-risk populations wear masks in enclosed spaces and at gatherings. In addition, mask-wearing was recommended for medical staff and for visitors to nursing homes and geriatric institutions.

The Galilee Medical Center reported that the boy was suffering from influenza for several days. Prolonged resuscitation attempts were carried out at his home, first by his father and later by MDAemergency teams. Upon arrival at the emergency room, doctors continued advanced resuscitation efforts, but were forced to pronounce his death. The medical center noted that the case underscores the importance of flu vaccinations, especially for children, and added that staff are accompanying the boy's family and offering condolences.
