Bird flu found in turkeys in kibbutz in northern Israel
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF OCTOBER 31, 2021 12:05

Turkeys were found to be infected with the bird flu in a coop in the Ma'ayan Tzvi kibbutz in northern Israel, the Agricultural Ministry announced on Sunday.
The coop, containing 5,000 turkeys, has been isolated and the Agricultural Ministry is preparing to treat the affected farm. The ministry is also testing all nearby farms for the flu as well.
Earlier this month, a turkey farm containing 42,000 turkeys was found to have turkeys infected with the bird flu. Before that, the last incidents of bird flu were detected in Israel in October and December 2020.//

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
Several outbreaks in poultry have occurred in Israel in the past few weeks. The hypothesis is that the domestic birds are infected by fomites sourced from wild birds. Israel is a migration route for about 500 millions birds twice a year between Africa and Asia. The pond where the pelican was found is about 20 kms from one of the outbreaks in poultry (Maayan Zvi).

The H5N1 virus outbreak that began in the Hula Valley and the community of Margaliot in the upper Galilee, next to the Lebanese border, has now reached into the farming community of Barak, south of Afula.

There are around 5,500 chickens infected with the virus on an organic farm in Barak, the Agriculture Ministry said.
...
The ministry said it was concerned about the virus infecting humans who live near the infected fowl and that the Agriculture Ministry veterinarians had been working “according to emergency procedures” and actively monitoring all farms in the north.

The public was advised to make sure to thoroughly cook eggs and other chicken products to kill any viruses or bacteria.

SOME 700,000 BIRDS HAVE BEEN CULLED

Avian flu killing birds in Israel could jump to humans, warns epidemiologist

Prof. Amnon Lahad calls prospect of virus crossing species ‘very concerning,’ as Health Ministry advises Israelis to avoid sick birds and not to buy unregulated chicken, eggs

By NATHAN JEFFAY

The danger of Israel’s bird flu outbreak jumping to humans is real and “very concerning,” according to a top epidemiologist.

Prof. Amnon Lahad, chairman of Israel’s National Council for Community Health, told The Times of Israel that he is tracking the avian outbreak, which has killed thousands of wild birds.

“The widespread nature of the avian flu is very concerning, especially given that it is infecting chickens and not just wild birds. It’s made the move from wildlife to stock animals, and I’m hoping it won’t make the next step to humans,” he said Wednesday.

Most bird flu strains don’t infect humans. However, four strains have caused concern: H5N1 since 1997, H7N9 since 2013, H5N6 since 2014 and H5N8 since 2016. Lahad said that since little is known about the current infections, the possibility of a jump to humans must be taken seriously.

He said that a jump to humans could occur after a mutation, but that it’s also entirely possible the flu could cross species without a mutation.
