Israel reports bird flu outbreak at northern poultry farm

​JERUSALEM, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Israel's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security reported Sunday that it has detected an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, at a northern poultry farm.

The infections of H5N1, an influenza subtype, were discovered at a breeding coop housing 34,000 broiler chickens in the village of Nahalal in the Jezreel Valley, about 600 meters from a turkey farm where bird flu broke out earlier this month.

The latest outbreak is the third detected by the ministry in 2024, with two reported in Nahalal and another found at a turkey farm in the village of Ram-On, about 20 km south of Nahalal.

Avian influenza H5N1 was discovered in a turkey breeding coop in Kibbutz Maayan Zvi, near Zichron Yaakov. The disease was discovered in a coop that contains four buildings and contains approximately 7,000 adult breeding turkeys. In order to prevent the spread of the disease, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is operating in accordance with the international working procedures of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) regarding the treatment of avian influenza, and among other things, a quarantine zone was defined within a range of up to 10 km from the infected coop. The veterinary services at the Ministry of Agriculture continue to conduct active monitoring of all coops in the area.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security calls on breeders of ornamental birds and poultry, as well as free-range coops, to keep the birds indoors and prevent them from wandering in open areas, thus reducing the risk of infection from wild birds during the migration season.

Since the beginning of September, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has identified 5 foci of avian influenza, in Moshav Nahalal, Moshav Ram-On in the Ta'anach region, in the Gilboa Regional Council, followed by additional foci in Nahalal, Kibbutz Alonim and Kibbutz Tzora, where the last foci was discovered in mid-October.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security emphasizes that meat, poultry and eggs purchased only at organized points of sale and marketing should be consumed. Eggs must be marked and packaged in cardboard or plastic on each side. In addition, eggs and chicken should only be consumed after they have been thoroughly cooked, baked, or fried to prevent health hazards.

The sixth outbreak of bird flu this winter is identified at a turkey farm on Moshav Kfar Vitkin, near Netanya, in central Israel.

The Agriculture Ministry says it will cull some 19,000 12-week-old turkeys in six coops to contain the outbreak. A quarantine zone has been set up within a range of up to 10 kilometers (six miles) of the infected farm...

...So far this year, there have been four other outbreaks of the disease in northern Israel, and one at Kibbutz Tzora near Jerusalem...

Two more cases of H5N1 bird flu in the Sharon region: The first case was detected in a fattening turkey coop in Moshav Kfar Vitkin, where there are approximately 12,800 12-week-old turkeys in six buildings. The veterinary services at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security continue to conduct active monitoring of all coops in the area. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security calls on breeders of ornamental birds and backyard poultry, as well as free-range coops, to keep the birds they own inside buildings, prevent them from roaming in open areas, and thus reduce the risk of infection from wild birds during the migration season.

In the current migration season (2024-2025), the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has so far identified eight foci of avian influenza. The first event was in Moshav Nahalal, followed by additional foci in Moshav Ram-On in the Ta'anach region, in another coop in Nahalal, in Kibbutz Alonim, and in Kibbutz Tzora between the months September-October. Avian influenza of the H5N1 type was diagnosed in a flock of turkeys in Nahalal in the Jezreel Valley.

(MENAFN- Nam News Network) JERUSALEM, Jan 8 (NNN-MA'AN) – The Israeli Ministry of Agriculture, yesterday, reported an outbreak of bird flu in a coop housing 29,300 chickens, in the village of Hibat Tzion in central Israel.

To curb the spread of the disease, all chicken coops within a 10-km radius of the affected area were placed under quarantine and are being closely monitored.

The ministry advised bird breeders to keep their flocks indoors, and recommended that the public buy eggs from regulated sources with proper packaging, and ensure poultry and eggs are thoroughly cooked.​..
